“Because my father came to me for help. He’s never done that before, so I want to come through for him. I know something big must be up for him to ask for my help.”

Something strange passed over his face.

“When?”

“Tomorrow in his office. It’s on the twentieth floor. Nine a.m.”

“Fine.” He turned back toward the bartender and took a sip of his drink before I dared look at Morgan. He looked just as shocked as I did that Trigger agreed to meet with my father.

“Grim know you came to me?” Trigger said without turning around. What? No.

“No. Why would Grim be involved in this?”

“Just askin’.”

“I really appreciate it, Trigger.”

I mouthed a quick thanks to Morgan and motioned I’d call him. As I turned to leave, I heard Trigger’s voice.

“Kenna,” Trigger’s gaze found mine in the mirror in front of him, “tell Grim you came to me.”

“Why?” I felt my anger kick in, but I pushed it down.

“His hotel. If I’m fuckin’ doing something for one of his, he needs to know.”

“All right.”

Simon

Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap! Tap! One of Cameron’s security guards gave me a hard side eye, and I realized my pen wildly tapped against the rail. I willed my fingers to still, and the silence crept back in. I’d been up against criminals like Trigger before, but this was different, this was coming at him from a whole different angle, and it made me second guess this meeting. My gut told me it wasn’t wise, but my mind argued we needed answers, fast. It didn’t help that I was Cameron’s private investigator, and I’d come up emptyhanded.

My phone vibrated, and I jumped at the sudden intrusion into my thoughts.

“Excuse me.” I held a finger up to the armed guards and slipped around the corner. “Simon Gable,” I offered as a greeting even though I knew exactly who it was.

“We have a problem.”

When do we not?

“Which is?”

“He’s sniffin’ around.”

“Who?”

“You know who,” the voice on the other end snapped. I pinched the bridge of my nose. “He’s getting too close. He’s following some fucking lead that took him to someone’s house where he almost discovered?—”

“Got it.” I cut him off. I didn’t need to know what he almost discovered. “Let me see what I can do.”

“You better think of something fast because you put me in a bad situation here. You know I never liked this idea in the first place. We should’ve killed him in Mexico when we had the chance. I’m not sure how much longer I can keep things at bay.”

“Give me a few days.”

“You’ve got one.” The line ended.

“Shit.” I heard a door open and knew Cameron would wonder where I was. I stepped around the corner and came face to face with Trigger. He stared down at me, and for a moment I wondered if he’d overheard the phone call. I forgot how huge he was in person, over six feet, well over two hundred, but it was all muscle. His tattoos showed under his leather cut, and when he rubbed his beard, I saw his knuckles were raw. He was a cage fighter, just like Grim. I swallowed hard and tried not to back up.

“Thanks for coming.” I tried not to trip over my words when I saw he’d brought Brick along. “Right this way.” I awkwardly moved around Trigger and pointed back down the hallway. The chains that swung from their belt loops made an eerie sound as we walked. Maybe it was because I’d seen what those were actually for, and it wasn’t to protect their wallets. “Can I get you anything?”
