“No,” Brick grunted.

I was good at my job, but over the years I’d learned when to show confidence and when to keep my head down and just get the job done. It didn’t help that when we stepped into Cameron’s office there were four more armed men inside. I tried not to think of a video I’d seen of Trigger as he took down a bunch of guards in the blink of an eye outside Minnie’s club. In fact, I feared Grim even more because he was younger and was Trigger’s prodigy. Even the thought that Grim knew what Trigger knew was somehow terrifying.

“Trigger.” Cameron stood and offered a hand, but Trigger just looked at him. “Right.” He must have remembered Trigger didn’t like to be touched. “How are you, Brick?”

“Standin’.” Brick shrugged slightly.

“Good. Please take a seat.” Cameron pointed to the conference table, and they sat. I moved to the opposite side of the table to sit across from them. Not that the distance or the table between us would do much if they wanted to kill me. “I’m sure you’re wondering why I wanted to see you.”

“Kenna said you got trouble.” Trigger’s voice was low and harsh.

“I do.” Cameron cleared his throat uncomfortably. “It’s no secret that when I’m hired, I get the job done. It’s why I’m one of the best criminal defense lawyers in Arizona, California?—”

“Don’t need your fuckin’ resume.” Trigger cut him off. “Out with it.”

“What I mean to say is,” Cameron’s temper idled, and I prayed he’d keep calm, “I don’t lose. Which brings me to you. I had all my ducks in a row for a client looking to face life without parole for murder. Suddenly, the guy who I was setting up to take the fall for my client ends up dead before trial. To make matters worse, I only find out three days before trial.”

“Shit happens.” Brick spoke up.

“Not when you have people hired to protect him,” I tossed back.

“The fuck you need me for?” Trigger seemed annoyed.

“I,” Cameron leaned forward, his face red, “need to know who killed my fall guy.”

“Why don’t you ask your hired men?” Brick asked.

“They’re dead, too,” I answered to try to keep Cameron calm.

“Who was your fall guy?” Trigger looked at me.

“Martin Castillo.”

“Guy like Castillo’s got a lot of enemies.” He rubbed his chin. “Why would you care who took him out?”

“Why don’t you just find him for me and let me worry about that.” Cameron eased back into his chair, and I held my breath. Christ, he was stupid sometimes. Silence ticked.

“What’s in it for me?” Trigger shot a look at Brick. Brick smirked, and I felt a sudden shift in their mood. The hair on the back of my neck rose.

“My services for free.” Cameron waved a hand at himself like he was some kind of prize.

“Try again.” Trigger scrunched his nose like he wasn’t impressed.

“Vegas immunity.”

“Already got that.” Trigger leaned back and pulled a joint from somewhere and lit the tip.

Seriously, Cameron, that’s all you have to offer?

“I got a guy in Mexico with the best cocaine.”

“Better than Grim’s?” Trigger glared at him through slit eyes.

Jesus. I shot Cameron a look not to answer that.

“Better.” He gave him a cocky grin, and Trigger’s face was like stone.

Fuck! I raced to think of something to smooth the situation over.
