“You’re trying to do right by us, but you’re keeping my girl over there.” I rubbed my lips in an effort to stop myself from ripping his throat out.

“I needed insurance you’d listen.” He shifted in his seat.

“And I’m listening, so give me what’s mine.”

“I will, but listen, whoever it is that’s got it in for you, he’s targeting your hotel. He hired some of my guys to rough up some of your foremen and probably some of their guys. Now that I know this, I’ve pulled them back, but I don’t know how long I can keep ’em reined in. My club was left with a lot of debt, and I got hungry mouths to feed. We got families, too. Not all the guys who are wearing stripes are ours anymore. Some of them left when my uncle was killed, so they aren’t under my command.” Caleb looked at the man on the floor. “They’ll be dealt with in time.”

“How are they contacting them?” Trigger asked.

“Cale.” He signaled one of his men to start talking.

“They’re targeting our cuts.” It was clear he wasn’t pleased to share this information. He wouldn’t make eye contact. “They approach us after a few drinks outside that strip joint that his bitch owns.” He nodded at Trigger, who just smirked. That man just sealed his death. “They give us a card, with a number, and twenty-five percent down. There’s a time on it, you call at that time, a man gives you the details, you do the job, he calls back and tells you where you find the money.”

“Nothing’s traceable.” Caleb answered my next question. “That’s all we know.”

“Is it the same man who answers every time?” Brick asked.

“Don’t know.” Cale shrugged.

I cut in. “You got a copy of this card?”

“Nope, burned it.” The guy named Cale shrugged. The guy who held Kenna chuckled from under his beard as he lifted his chin at me. Caleb turned in his seat and eyed him. “Wouldn’t matter anyway. Don’t know if it’s the same guy, but it’s a different time and number.”

“That’s what we got.” Caleb stood, and we mirrored his movement. “I hope this counts for something.” He nodded at me and then at Trigger. “Mong,” he pointed to Kenna, “let her go.”

The man who held Kenna shoved her forward, but when I reached for her, he yanked her back.

“You better watch this pretty young thing.” He sniffed her hair as Kenna struggled to pull away. “She’s unmarked and up for the takin’.”

“I’d rather skin myself alive,” she hissed at him and tried to rip her arm away.

“Mong,” Caleb barked as I stepped forward and sliced him across the face and down his arm. I grabbed Kenna and put her behind me as he digested what I had done.

“She may not be marked, but you are.” Blood pooled down his face and body, and the pain started to kick in.

“You want him to live?” Trigger snarled at Caleb. “I’d suggest you get movin’.”

“Watch your back, Grim,” Caleb warned. “Hers too, because you guys pissed someone off real bad, and they’re coming for you both.” As they filed out, I felt Kenna grab my shirt from behind. I turned around and she pressed her face into my chest. Her entire body shook.

“Watch yours, too,” I tossed back.

“He’s got an interesting way of gettin' someone’s attention,” Brick snarled to Trigger.

“You okay?” I held her away from me and brushed her hair off her face. She nodded a few times. “How did they get you?”

“I was grabbed after I left Minnie, and it just happened so fast. Just—” She hesitated. “Just give me a sec, okay?” she whispered as she stepped into me again. I pulled her to my chest to give her a moment.

“She okay?” Morgan asked, and I nodded as Rail flew in the door.

“We lettin’ them go?” He threw a questioning look at Trigger, who nodded. I knew Rail must have a lot of questions as to what happened here. He whirled around with a huff and made a beeline for the bar.

“Do we head back?” Brick looked at Trigger, who rubbed his face. I knew he wondered about the same thing we did. Was it safe to return on the side roads, or would they be lying in wait somewhere along the way? None of us trusted the Stripe Backs before, and now we knew some had gone rogue, it just made things a whole lot worse.

“Jesse’s on his way.” I knew he’d be here soon.

“We head to Dirt’s.” Brick’s face lit up at Trigger’s words. “Get Jesse to meet us there, Grim, it’ll be safer than here.”

“Yeah, okay.”
