Holy hotcakes.

My heart is thundering, a wet sensation buzzing between my legs as Liam slides his thumb across his phone screen.

“Hey, sis. What’s up?” He starts laughing within seconds, grabbing my hand and pulling me toward the house.

Is he as affected by that make-out session as I am?

I can barely walk straight, and he’s chatting with his sister like we’ve just been out for a Sunday afternoon stroll at the park.

“I just got home,” he says, leading me through to the kitchen after we’ve shed our jackets and boots. The tops of his ears turn pink, and he smiles. “Not a date, just… walking a friend home from work.” He winks at me, and now my cheeks are getting hot.

I brush my hand over one of them and reach for the kettle, needing something to do.

“Anyone want a drink?” I call into the living room.

“Yep!” Ethan replies. “Hey, lil’ mouse? You want a hot chocolate or something?”

“Ha!” She keeps her eyes on the big TV screen as she negotiates some maze with the gaming controller. “Baby, do you even need to ask?”

“I’m just being polite.”

“Since when are you ever polite?” Her nose wrinkles as her tongue sticks out the side of her mouth and her thumbs start going crazy.

I shake my head at the screen and grab mugs out of the cupboard.

Waving to get Liam’s attention, I hold up a mug and raise my eyebrows at him. He shakes his head, and then his eyes take on this dreamy kind of quality.

“You can meet her if you want. Here…” He puts the phone on speaker, and my body goes stiff as a board. All except my eyes, which are bulging at him. “Sofia, say hi to my friend, Rachel. She’s staying at Hockey House for a little while.”

“Your girlfriend?” The young girl’s voice perks up.

“Friend,” Liam qualifies, but he can’t seem to look at me as he says it.

“Hi, Sofia,” I call into the phone.

“Is that Sofia?” Casey appears in the kitchen. “Hey, kitten!”

“Hi, Casey.” Sofia’s voice goes drippy sweet while Liam casts a glare at his roommate.

“What?” Casey mouths, lifting both hands with a knowing grin that makes Liam softly growl.

I giggle at the exchange between them.

“So, Rachel. How do you fit into Hockey House?” Sofia asks while Casey wanders into the living room and starts trying to distract Mikayla.

“If you make me miss out on my new high score, I’m gonna put scorpions in your bed.”

Casey hoots with laughter. “Where the hell are you gonna find scorpions, mouse girl?”

“Oh, I will find a way! Now back off. I’m serious, Casey.”

I snicker. “She’s so intense sometimes.”

“Is that Mikayla?” Sofia asks.

“Yep. My best friend.” I smile at the phone. “That’s how I fit into Hockey House. I’m just staying for a little while to…” I glance at Liam, unsure what to say.

He smiles at me, about to tell her something, and for once, my stomach doesn’t clench with worry.
