“Rachel!” His roar bounces off the concrete walls.

I flinch and whimper, resting my head against the car door and closing my eyes.

“You fucking thief! Where the hell are you?”

My swallow is thick, and I freak out that he can hear it.

“You better give that money back, you little bitch! Don’t think for a second that we’ve forgotten about you!”

“What is he talking about?” Mikayla whispers, but it’s too loud.

I press my finger to my lips, trying to shut her up, then lift my chin when I think I hear him coming.

He’s searching between cars.

Shit!

“We have to go,” I mouth.

Mikayla frowns but can obviously taste my fear. With a short nod, she turns, about to peek around the back of the SUV, when he suddenly appears.

I scream, lurching back as he makes a grab for me.

Mikayla pounces to her feet, shoving him back.

It’s like watching a raccoon take on a bear. She pushes him with a grunt but barely moves him an inch. He goes to shove her out of the way while I scramble back on my ass, too terrified to do more than scream at him again.

Matt’s massive hand wraps around Mikayla’s short arm as he tries to throw her aside, but she lashes out with her fist, clipping him in the chin.

He grunts, then turns on her with wild eyes, his upper lip curling before he pulls her forward and slaps her across the face with the back of his hand. Her whimper is soft as she takes the blow, but it only seems to ignite her. With a feral yell, she goes after him again, trying to wrench her arm free of his grasp while kicking at his shins and lashing out at his face.

She’s tiny but fierce, and I wish I had even an ounce of her courage.

Matt wrestles to push her away, finally gaining a bit of control and smashing her back against the car before raising his fist and landing a clean shot right across her cheek.

“No!” I scream as she crumples like a limp noodle.

Matt’s head swings back toward me, and I feel like I’m facing the Terminator.

“Shit,” I cry, jumping to my feet and running around the back of the car.

I can’t leave Mick behind, but I can’t let Matt touch me again. He’s gonna kill me!

Scrambling into my purse, I dig out my phone, nearly fumbling it as I make a call I should have made the second I spotted Theo’s asshole friend in the mall.

CHAPTER 24

LIAM

As soon as we dropped the girls off and programmed the rink’s address into the car’s nav system, Ethan started peppering me with questions.

“So, you and Ray, huh? How long’s that been going on?”

I look out the window, not really wanting to answer him, but he won’t let up.

So I give in with a soft sigh. “We kind of started making out a couple weeks ago, but we hadn’t taken it further.”

“No dates or anything?”
