“Kind of her to say,” Theodosia said. “Considering the circumstances.”

Gorsk bounced out of the chair and said, “Have a seat, Miss Browning. Your turn.”

“Sure,” Brittany put in. “Let me tame those brows again with a little gel.”

“If it’s not too much trouble,” Theodosia said. Truth be told, she loved the idea of a quick touch-up.

“No trouble,” Brittany said as Theodosia climbed into the chair, while Gorsk leaned in the doorway to watch.

“How’s it going on set?” Theodosia asked Gorsk. “With the new director.”

“I must say I’m pleased,” Gorsk said, jingling the change in his pants pocket. “I don’t believe they’ve missed a single step.”

Except for Josh Morro getting killed, which shut down almost two days of shooting, Theodosia thought.

“I think that new director is kind of cute,” Brittany said. “In an intense, bad boy kind of way.”

“By the way, do either of you know who the guy in the cowboy shirt is?” Theodosia asked. “He seems to be new on set as well.”

“That’s Joe Adler’s personal assistant,” Gorsk said. “He’s supposedly from New Orleans.”

“A director needs a personal assistant?” Theodosia said as Brittany worked on her.

“It’s an industry thing,” Sidney Gorsk explained. “A kind of status symbol that tells people you’re an important guy, that you’ve made it in showbiz.”

“I heard that Adler and the cowboy are good friends that go way back,” Brittany added.

“Interesting,” Theodosia said. Then, nonchalantly, “Are the police still talking to the cast and crew? Asking questions?”

Brittany and Gorsk exchanged glances.

“What?” Theodosia said.

“An investigator stopped by first thing this morning to ask Craig Cole a few more questions,” Brittany said.

“Is Cole a suspect?” Theodosia asked.

“I wouldn’t be surprised,” Gorsk said under his breath.

“There, all finished,” Brittany announced, patting Theodosia’s shoulder and handing her a small hand mirror.

“Wonderful. I love it,” Theodosia said, gazing at her perfectly arched brows. “You’re a genius.”

“And it looks like I’ve got more customers,” Brittany said as two more actors pushed their way into the room.

Theodosia followed Gorsk out into the hallway.

Gorsk gave her a meaningful look, lowered his voice, and said, “I think any concern about Craig Cole may be justified.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Just the fact that Cole and Morro famously didn’t get along. I also think Morro tried to block a deal that Cole was trying to get going with a new screenplay.”

“What kind of deal?” Theodosia asked.

“Cole’s written some potboiler called Devious Women and was pitching it to FOX as well as that new streaming service, Plum Tree. Plum Tree especially is desperate for content. But rumor tells me Morro tried to torpedo it.”

“Why would he do that?”
