“I heard my door rattle and then a dog—” Andrea looked down at Earl Grey. “I guess it was your dog—started barking like mad.”

“Do you have any idea why somebody would be lurking outside your room?”

“I wish you’d stop asking questions like that because you’re scaring me to death!” Andrea shouted back.

“I don’t mean to. I’m just trying to piece together what happened,” Theodosia said in quieter tones. She was feeling slightly better. Breathing okay, the fright starting to wear off. Now she was mostly angry.

“How would I know who was prowling around?” Andrea cried, her tone sour and shrill. “My room’s the only one that’s occupied on this floor.” She flapped a hand in the direction of her room. “It’s, like, a garret, small and snug, but a little lonely, too.”

“You’re the only one on this floor?”

“I am now.” Andrea pointed to the door across the hall from hers. “That’s the room where Josh Morro was staying.”

“So maybe someone was trying to break into Morro’s room,” Theodosia said.

Andrea lowered the candelabra. “I dunno. Maybe.”

“Are his belongings still in there?” Theodosia wondered if that’s what the intruder had been after. If she’d somehow interrupted him as he tried to pick the lock and ransack the room.

Andrea shrugged. “Maybe. I guess. Since it’s none of my business I really don’t want to know.” She turned to go back into her room.

“Andrea, wait. You were about to tell me something this morning.”

“I was?”

“Just before Adler called you onto the set.”

“I don’t remember. I don’t…I don’t want to talk about it. About anything,” Andrea said as she slammed the door in Theodosia’s face.

“Rude,” Theodosia muttered as she picked up Earl Grey’s leash. “Are all actresses that rude?” Earl Grey looked up at her and gave a commiserating look as they made their way downstairs.

Going down the last flight of steps, Theodosia ran into a huffing, puffing Sidney Gorsk.

“Were you just upstairs?” Theodosia asked the agent. “On the fourth floor?”

Gorsk looked startled. “No, why do you ask?”

“Because somebody slammed into me in the dark. Tried to choke me, then pushed me down the stairs.”

“Are you sure?”

“Of course I’m sure. You see this bruise?” Theodosia slid up her pants leg. “It’s going to be purple by tomorrow morning.”

Gorsk peered at Theodosia’s ankle. “Better put some ice on that.”

“No kidding.” Then, “You’re out late.”

“Just a business meeting.”

Theodosia decided this might be a prime opportunity to question Gorsk. “I know you represent Andrea Blair. Is she your only client right now?”

Gorsk tilted his head back and let loose a hearty laugh that sounded a little forced. “Goodness no. My talent management firm, Gorsk and Gadby Creative, represents dozens of actors and writers.”

“Writers,” Theodosia said. “Writers like Craig Cole?”

“A few screenwriters, yes. But mainly successful ones. Funny you should even mention that,” Gorsk said. “I was meeting with a prospective client tonight.”

“Talking to someone about a script?”
