“That’s right.”

“What was she doing there?”

“Not sure. I figure she was either shopping her little heart out or trying to get a bead on Delaine.”

“You think Carly got wind that Delaine had been dating Josh Morrow?”

“Maybe. Or maybe the girl’s just a shopaholic.”

“But nothing actually happened between them,” Drayton said. It was a statement, not a question.

“Not that I could see.”

“Okay, other than Carly Brandt showing up, how was it?”

“Have you ever seen that old movie Bedlam with Boris Karloff? It was like that, only the inmates were all skinny women with money,” Theodosia said. “Plus, I realized that I simply don’t have the confidence to strut around a store showing off a frothy dress.”

“Nonsense, you’re one of the most superbly confident people I know.”

“Maybe at running a tea shop. But interacting with fashion people? No way.”

“How about interacting with movie people at Josh Morro’s memorial service tonight?” Drayton asked.

“Oh no, do we have to?”

Drayton nodded. “I think we pretty much have to go and show the flag. Besides, you can always squeeze in a little more investigating.”

Theodosia sighed. “There is that.”

Josh Morro’s memorial service wasn’t churchy or religious or even one bit somber. Mostly it was a cocktail party with lots of movie people milling around, drinking wine and eating hors d’oeuvres as they rubbed shoulders with Charleston Film Board people and a few local actors and producers.

“Look at this,” Theodosia said as she and Drayton walked in. “Most of our murder suspects are neatly rounded up in one room.”

“Is that what you really believe?” Drayton asked.

“Whoever killed Josh Morro and Helene has to be part of this crew,” she said. “I just don’t see it as being an outsider.”

“For a while you were laser focused on Craig Cole.”

“Right,” Theodosia said, looking around for him. “But I can’t figure out Craig Cole’s connection to Helene.” She stood on tiptoes and finally saw the top of Cole’s head bobbing among the crowd. “There’s Cole now, stopping to talk with Carly Brandt.”

“The ex-fiancée who may or may not be stalking Delaine.”

Theodosia’s eyes roved across the rest of the crowd. “I see Andrea Blair hanging out with her agent, Sidney Gorsk. And Lewin Usher, our homegrown movie producer, just walked in. Ted Juniper just sidled up to what’s probably an open bar.”

“The one with the drinking problem,” Drayton said.

“The one who’s also the lighting expert.”

“And deals in all things electrical and might know how to hotwire a metal chair?” Drayton asked.

“You got that right,” Theodosia said. She tapped an index finger against her lower lip. “Who’s missing? Oh, of course. Joe Adler, the director.”

“Do you think he’ll bother to show up?”

Theodosia shrugged. “Search me. Meanwhile, why don’t we help ourselves to some munchies?”
