Page 2 of Keeping Eveline

Work was what he needed to concentrate on. The business was expanding, at his request. The only way for it to succeed was for him to put his everything into it, like he’d done with his Delta career.

Success was reached through hard work, not handed out like a participation trophy.

The early fingers of dawn were lightening the sky, reminding Ox that he was miles from his home and he had a busy day ahead of him.

Giving the Hollywood sign one last look, he set off back down the path.

Not feeling lighter, but a little less restless.

A couple of hours later, Ox sat at the desk in his home office going over emails. The plus side for waking up before dawn cracked its ass over the horizon was he was able to get some of the mundane tasks out of the way before he headed into the office.

The last few days, he’d been caught up in protection detail for an NBA player as he headed to meetings with a prospective team who wanted to lure him to this side of the country. Ox had a built a relationship with the management company who handled clients over a broad spectrum of industries.

The work was easy, but mind-numbingly boring on occasions, which was why he’d approached Storm and Ash to ask if he could take the LA office in a little bit of a different direction. Both were former military and more than okay with the expansion plans Ox had presented.

Now they were working with an FBI taskforce that was focused on bringing back people who’d been kidnapped, both domestically and internationally. It reminded him of his Delta days, and no matter that he was older, he could still keep up.

An email popped into his inbox, a name he recognized. One he’d tried to push to the far recesses of his mind so he didn’t have to think about it—and yet he struggled to forget. Without opening it, he hit delete.

Ox shut down his computer and unplugged it. Time to get to the office.

The whole way on the drive in, that email haunted him. He probably should’ve read it.

Eveline Durville looked at the steel and glass structure.

Why am I standing here?

Her emails had gone unanswered—not surprising really—and if she called, he’d ignore her that way as well.

A face-to-face confrontation was the only solution.

Even then, it was risky. He could throw her out on her ass, like he’d done once before.

Eveline slammed the door on those memories. The way her body warmed, as if his hands were on her right this moment, wasn’t helping with her resolve.

The information she had burned a hole in her purse. Would Kyle believe her when she showed him? Or would he think it was all a ruse? After all, she worked for one of his major competitors.

Even Eveline doubted what she’d discovered, and yet, now that her eyes had been opened, she could see all the shady things her boss was doing.

All the unethical ways he was creating business. The way he was undercutting people like Kyle and Alliez Security, just so he could get the job and make it worse for the client, so they spent more money getting the “extra” services Gerald and Triple Z Security provided.

It was only a matter of time before Gerald went too far and the little “mishaps” he was arranging to happen would have far more serious consequences than a broken car window.

She was here now. There was no point turning back. Eveline walked up to the glass doors, determined to follow through with her plan. The entrance whispered open, and a gust of cool air flowed around her legs.

Her high heels clacked over the black marble floor as she headed to the elevators. She kept her gaze forward, not wanting to be distracted by anyone or catch anyone’s attention.

Not that she thought anyone would stop her. The building wasn’t owned by Alliez. hey just had an office in it. The place was a lot fancier than the building she worked in. Why had she stayed with Triple Z for so long?

It wasn’t as if she couldn’t get another job in an office. Her skills were exemplary, and she wasn’t being modest. There was only one reason the office ran as smoothly as it did, and it was all because of Eveline.

No, she’d stayed because she’d seen an email she probably wasn’t supposed to see, and that was all it’d taken for her to start investigating the business practices of the company.

Now she had the evidence, and she planned to lay it all out in front of Kyle and hope that he believed her. Hoped he’d help her shut down Gerald’s business. Sure, she’d be out of a job, but it was a much better option than him ripping off and hurting people.

The ride to the floor the Alliez offices were on was swift, and before she was ready, she was facing the door. Not giving herself a chance to question her motives again, Eveline pushed the door open and smiled at the smartly dressed receptionist when she lifted her head.

“Welcome to Alliez Security. How may I help you?” The woman’s tone was polite and professional.
