Where was that?

“I don’t have one now.”

“You do.”

“Where?”

Eveline didn’t even have a childhood home to go back to. Not that she would anyway. Her past was that—the past.

One of the things she believed in was that looking back never achieved anything. It wasn’t like she could change anything that had happened. She always looked forward, but after today, doing that was going to be hard.

The car pulled to a stop, pulling her from her thoughts. The dim lighting of an undercover parking garage greeted her.

Eveline recognized it. The last time she’d been here had been a couple of hours ago. “Why are we back at your place?”

“Because you need a place to stay, and after everything that’s happened, I’m not letting you out of my sight.”

Some women would appreciate the strong stance Kyle was taking, and there was a part of her that was grateful for what he was doing.

She didn’t want to think about finding a place to stay. The other part was pissed off he’d been so presumptuous to think he could make decisions without asking her and that was the part that was taking over now.

“And why did you think making this decision without consulting me was a good one?” Eveline turned in her seat, ignoring the jolt of pain in her shoulder.

“Do you want to be alone?” Kyle countered. His demeanor was calm and that ruffled her even more because the thought of being alone didn’t sit well with her at all.

Being alone meant she’d be in her head the whole time. Going over every little detail of what happened to her and her house. The last thing she wanted to do was admit this out loud.

Was she being irrational? Definitely, but right this second, her emotions were taking her on a rollercoaster ride where dips and turns and twists had her going in every direction.

“Doesn’t matter if I did or not. You made a decision that affected me without asking. That sucks, Kyle. After everything I’ve been through, granting me a little control over my life and where I’m going to sleep tonight would be appreciated.”

Kyle shifted so he was looking directly at her, the expression on his face neutral. There was no frown marring his forehead. His lips weren’t pulled into a thin line. No indication at all that her words had annoyed him.

Did he agree or disagree with her?

“Eveline, for your safety, and until we know who is causing you all this grief, would you consider staying at my place? My apartment has twenty-four-hour security. No one is allowed up without my approval. No one will be able to hurt you.”

Well damn, with a few sentences, Kyle had deflated her anger balloon, and if she were honest with herself, she was tired of fighting her irrational side.

Normally, Eveline was level-headed. Then again, bad things didn’t normally happen to her to put her off balance.

Where else could she go if she didn’t stay at Kyle’s place?

There wasn’t anyone, and the idea of his secure building appealed to her. Deep down, Kyle wouldn’t blink at her sudden agreement to stay at his place.

“Thank you. I appreciate the offer and would like to take you up on it.”

Well then, that was uber polite, but she didn’t care. All she wanted was to go upstairs, get some pain relief into her system, and have a nap.

For a few hours, she could forget that she had nothing.

No clothes.

No home.

Nothing.
