What is his endgame?

The more they dug, the more puzzle pieces they found. None of them fit together neatly.

Chapter Twenty-Three

Curled up on the couch, Kyle’s arms around her, Eveline relaxed for the first time in, well, she couldn’t remember when.

Three days had passed since she’d discovered the photos. She’d sent an email to Gerald saying she quit, and she hadn’t heard anything back from him.

Not that she’d expected to. Her former boss probably wasn’t surprised that she’d quit. He would’ve come back from his meeting to find her gone.

The moment he walked into his office, he would’ve discovered why. In her haste to get out of the place, Eveline had left the box in the middle of his floor. No way he would’ve have missed it.

That was the issue.

Why hadn’t he called her when he found evidence of her snooping?

Probably because the first thing Gerald would’ve done was find out where she was from the trackers he’d placed in her purse and found her at the Alliez offices. No way would he try to contact her while she was there.

Of course, now he had no idea where she was, and for that, she was thankful.

“Wanna watch a movie or something?” Kyle asked, his voice a soft rumble in her ear.

From the second he’d walked them out of his office, he’d been her rock. He’d taken to working from home again. She’d heard him on the phone talking to someone called Julian about an upcoming trip.

Eveline kept waiting for him to tell her he was going away soon, but he hadn’t said a word, and she hadn’t brought it up. She hadn’t wanted him to think she’d been eavesdropping deliberately. She also didn’t want to contemplate him leaving her.

“I wouldn’t mind watching something fun. Something I don’t have to think about or concentrate on.”

“I can find something like that.” Kyle reached for the remote and flicked the TV on.

The steady thump of his heart beneath her ear was a sound she loved. Loved knowing she could hear and feel it because she was as close to Kyle as she could possibly be.

The familiar opening bars of Friends filled the room, and Eveline smiled. “How did you know this is one of my favorite shows?”

“Educated guess. There aren’t too many people who don’t like the show. But I have to ask are you Team Rachel and Ross or Team Joey and Rachel?”

Eveline pulled back, gaping. “As if there is any argument. Ross and Rachel, all the way.”

Kyle nodded, a mischievous glint in his eyes. “Just as well. I’d hate to break up with you over something as trivial as that.” He winked.

Laughter bubbled up. “Phew, glad I picked the right team then.”

“It is. Now settle down and be quiet, Rachel’s about to burst into the coffee shop in her wedding dress.”

Damn, he was taking this show seriously. Eveline also liked that he’d started the show from the very first episode.

She never would’ve pegged Kyle as a Friends fan, but she liked it. Did his employees know he enjoyed the show? Had he watched it when he’d been in the Army? When he’d been on deployment?

Or had he watched it when it first came out? He would’ve been pretty young.

None of that mattered. Kyle had picked the perfect show, and this was just what Eveline needed.

They laughed through a couple of the episodes, enjoying the banter. Although it was a little bittersweet now that one of the six was no longer part of the group.

As they discussed the group’s relationships, something Kyle said to her earlier came back to her.

I’d hate to break up with you.
