Page 68 of Keeping Eveline

To break up, they had to be in a relationship.

Was that what they had?

If Eveline was being truthful, she hadn’t let herself contemplate that they were in a relationship when it was something she wanted so badly.

After their one night together months ago, a restless feeling had been a constant companion, and she’d put it down to what she’d started to uncover with her job. However, in the last few weeks, the feeling had gone, and it was because of the man beside her. The way he always seemed to know what she needed. What she was feeling.

The first time he’d touched her at the bar, her body had come to life.

“I can hear your mind working hard there. What’re you thinking?”

Eveline sat up and pulled away gently, needing to see what his reaction would be, needing to look at him when she asked. “Are we in a relationship?”

If her question shocked him, there was no change in Kyle’s outward expression. His eyes didn’t widen in surprise. His lips didn’t firm into a thin line of disapproval. Not even a cheek muscle twitched.

“Why do you ask?” he asked.

She glanced back to the TV, seeing the show unfold in front of her but not hearing anything.

Was that her answer there? A question?

Only one way to find out, and it might crush her if he said something she didn’t want to hear, but at least she’d know.

“You said you’d hate to break up with me if I chose Joey and Rachel over Ross and Rachel.”

His blue eyes twinkled, and a kernel of excitement sprouted to life that maybe she was going to like his answer.

“Yeah, baby, we are,” Kyle said.

Four simple words. Words she wanted to hear. Words that should make her happy, and they did, but…Eveline couldn’t explain why that small bud of excitement hadn’t exploded into fireworks. “Nice of you to tell me.”

He grabbed the remote and turned the TV off, and the sudden silence hung in the air like an oppressive cloud. Kyle pulled her back toward him, and while she wanted to rest her head on his chest again, she didn’t.

She held herself stiff in his lap.

He didn’t say anything, just studied her.

What is he looking for? Is he wanting me to talk first?

Kyle’s fingers brushed her cheek, a sweet gesture, and she loved when he did that.

In fact, Eveline loved everything about him.

Loved everything about him.

Yes! I do. I love Kyle.

A mixture of elation and trepidation danced together, and she wrestled with which one to push aside, as Kyle still hadn’t breathed a word.

His body had momentarily stiffened, as if he saw into her mind and heard her internally screaming that she loved him.

Slowly, a soft smile broke out, and Eveline allowed herself to relax a little.

“From the first moment I spied you in that bar, I wanted to get close to you,” Kyle said. “You were laughing, and it was like a fire was lit inside of you and I wanted to get close to you. I wanted to feel that burn. I wanted it so bad. Wanted to know you. Hear your laugh. So, I approached. Lucky for me, you welcomed my appearance, and you opened up to me like a beautiful lily blooming to life. A flower to be cherished. That night”—he paused—“it was more than I thought it could be. I couldn’t get enough of you.”

Eveline remembered everything about that night. Every touch. Every kiss. Remembered the thrill she’d felt when he’d come up to her and talked to her. She’d seen him when he walked in and had admired him from afar.

Then the night had turned sour the moment Kyle had kicked her out of his bed.
