She’s learning.

“Yeah, right…same page. Sure.” Levi snorted. “You two are going to need to sync up if this is going to work.”

“If what is going to work?” Charlie, finally finding her voice again, pulled her focus away from me then turned to Levi.

“You didn’t fill her in yet?” Levi scoffed at me when I shrugged.

I had more important things to get straight with her first.

“Charlie, we know you’re not interested in taking our marks.” Levi was excited by his theory, his voice pumped, words flowing quickly. “And you’re right. It’s an archaic practice. I think I’ve figured out a work around so you can step into your role—”

“Whoa!” Charlie lifted a hand. “You’re still set on me becoming alpha?”

Levi’s eyes widened. “The prophecy—”

“The prophecy that says I belong to you?” Charlie scoffed and crossed her arms.

“The prophecy that says you belong with us.”

Levi was smooth, I’d give him that.

I’d have stuck to blunt and clear. Yes, the prophecy said she’d rise up, take the bites of powerful wolves to bolster her. I planned to be one of those who bonded with her.

“Okay, what’s the difference?”

“The difference is, maybe we can find a way to make the mental link more in sync.” Levi motioned to me. “We talked and realized that when your beast took over the other day, all three of us tried in one way or another to coax you back down using our connections to you. Kane tried physically. Johnny says he tried using his words, in your head.”

Her eyes widened. “I thought that was you,” she blurted, looking at me.

“You heard my voice in your head?” I’d been semi-conscious, with it enough to know what was going on but her beastly head had knocked some stars into mine. Had I been trying to communicate with her? It was possible on some subconscious level, yes, but I wasn’t intentionally trying to do anything but stay in the moment.

“I heard whispering, I just thought… I mean, it sounded like you.” She shook her head then waved Levi on. “Never mind.”

Did it bother her? That we were gaining access to her mind? She’d heard us, felt us, yearned for us, and in her mind, we were clearly one in the same. That was a good sign for our plans. It meant, at some level, her mind and body were accepting our role in her future.

“I used a visual connection,” Levi said, darting his gaze from her to me then back again. “I was trying to get you to focus on my face.”

“And your voice,” she said. “You were talking. I couldn’t hear your words, but I knew you were trying to calm me down. The cadence of your voice… It was soothing.”

By the way she shifted her eyes down and shuffled her feet, I could tell admitting that made her uncomfortable. We were getting to her…in one way or another.

“What’d I miss?” Johnny came running onto the field, his hair in a topknot and dressed in his gym clothes.

“I’m just filling Charlie in on things.”

“Levi’s got a good plan, right?” Johnny rubbed his hands together, practically bouncing on his toes. “Totally going to work.”

“I haven’t gotten there yet.” Levi scratched at the scruff on his jaw. “As I was saying, it’s clear that we each have a connection with you.”

There was a new flush to her cheeks as Johnny took in her appearance, lingering longer than necessary on her legs in her spandex.

“So, what we propose is that you let the beast side out, then we work together, all four of us, to reintegrate her with the rest of you.”

Charlie opened her mouth, but Levi kept going.

“We’ll act as your anchors, keeping you focused while you work on latching the threads you have with us to that side of you, too.”

“How in the hell do you think I’ll be able to do that?” Charlie threw her hands up, clearly exasperated.
