DIRT

Sergeant at Arms, Savage Angels MC

The nurse returns to her post without Lore, and I’m feeling helpless and frustrated at not being able to go with her. I’m not built for waiting. I thrive on direction and purpose, not this agonizing monotony. Waiting around is not what I’m good at. Give me a direction, a purpose, and I’ll fill the task, but this monotony of waiting is torture. The nurse gives me the once-over, her eyes landing on my cut.

“She might be awhile. Perhaps you could wait in the waiting room?” she suggests.

“I’m good.”

She raises one eyebrow and tilts her head to the side. “I’ll word that another way. Sir, please go wait in the visitor’s area.”

“I only want to make sure she’s okay.”

“And you can do that from the waiting room.”

Not wanting to get kicked out of the hospital, I rap my knuckles on the counter, turn, and push my way through the double doors and back to Destiny. She’s in a circle with the other women. They’re all holding hands, and it looks as though the strippers are all praying.

When I flop down on a chair, their gathering halts. Destiny approaches me, concern on her pretty face.

“Did you see him?”

“No.”

“Did you get an update?”

“No.”

Destiny throws her hands in the air. “Jesus, Dirt, what good are you?”

“Were you all praying?”

“Yes.” Destiny sits next to me. “Do you know Tobias’ mother?”

“Lore and I go way back. She had this spark and drew me in like a moth to a flame, but life has a way of changing things. It’s been a decade since I’ve seen her. We were moving in different directions, and she hated the MC. But the MC is all I’ve ever known… guess we were doomed from the get-go.”

“I’ve never known you to have just one woman. You seem to go from one to the next,” Destiny states.

“Lore was different. Hell, I was different. Knew she had a kid but didn’t know the kid was Tobias.”

Thinking about it, he has her eyes. They’re the same shade of deep, moody gray. It’s unusual, and when Lore used to get mad, they’d darken like a storm brewing. It was a sure sign she was going to rip me a new one.

“Tobias never told you who his mother was?”

With a shake of my head, I say, “We aren’t that close. Maybe he didn’t know I knew his mother.”

“Do you know Tobias at all? Of course, he knew. That man has more secrets than all of us put together, and he makes a point of knowing everything about everyone around him. He would have known… I’d bet money on it.”

“Why wouldn’t he have said anything?”

Destiny shrugs up a shoulder. “Maybe because it was over? When he wakes up, you can ask him.”

Leaning forward, I pray Tobias does wake up. Lore looked scared shitless getting off the elevator to this floor. The woman I knew was fearless—this Lore is older and maybe a little softer.

“You can all go.”

Looking up, Lore is standing in the visitor’s area, her gaze sweeping across all of us.

Destiny’s hand flies to her mouth, and tears spring to her eyes. “Oh, no! Is he?”
