Lore shakes her head, her hair fanning out around her. “No. Tobias is sedated and will be for the next few days. There’s no sense in you all being here.”

Destiny stands. “We want to be here. We all love Tobias.”

Lore nods, but her lips turn down at the corners. “I get that. But as his mother, his guardian, I’m telling you all to leave.”

Standing, I confront her. “All due respect, Lore, but you’ve got no right. Every person in this room is here for Tobias.”

Those gray eyes flash darker, and she cocks her head to the side. “Seems to me if it wasn’t for you people, my boy wouldn’t be at death’s door.” Lore flicks her gaze to Destiny. “I’ll keep you posted, but for now, I need you all to leave.”

Turning, Lore walks away from us without a backward glance. Half the room is crying, and I’m left wondering how I could have thought Lore was softer. She’s harder than ever.

“What the actual fuck was that?” asks Destiny as she points at Lore’s retreating form.

Holding up both hands, I say, “I’ll fix it. Give me a minute.”

Striding after Lore, I catch up and spin her around.

“What?” she asks deadpan.

“What?” Lore nods. “For fuck’s sake, Lore. All the women in that room care for your son. You can’t just kick them all out.”

She puts a hand on her hip and juts out the other one. “Actually, I can.”

“Lore, I get you’re going into momma-bear mode, but those women,” I point toward the waiting room, then put a hand on my chest. “And the Savage Angels are Tobias’ family.”

“No.”

“No?” Frustration colors my tone.

“No.” Lore leans into my space. “He’s my son. I’m listed as his guardian.” She flicks a hand. “Those women mean nothing to me. Tobias never mentioned them, but the Savage Angels? Yeah.” Her lips turn down. “He talked about all of you. And if I were a betting woman, I’d bet everything I own it was because of the Savage Angels he got shot in the first place.”

“Lore—”

“No. No more talking. You and them can leave. If you don’t, I’ll have security remove you.”

Reaching out, I put a hand on her shoulder. “It doesn’t need to be like this. You were once one of us.”

Lore shakes my hand off and steps back. “Time doesn’t heal all wounds, Dirt.”

She turns and walks away, once again giving me her back. This time, I don’t pursue her. Instead, I go back to the waiting area to a room full of strippers.

“Lore promised to keep us all informed, but for the moment, as his mother, she’s asked us to keep our distance.”

“Us? As in you too?” asks Destiny.

Scowling at the thought of leaving Tobias here without any of us, I reluctantly nod. “She’s asked the Savage Angels to vacate the building.”

Destiny’s eyebrows shoot up, and her mouth drops open. “She asked us all to leave?”

Candy steps forward. “But Tobias is family.”

The strippers all begin shaking their heads.

Taking a deep breath, I hold up my hands. “Yes, he is. But for now, we need to respect his mother’s wishes.”

Destiny’s lips go into a hard line. “We will.” The others begin to argue, so she holds up a finger. “For now.”

Scowling at me as though it’s my fault, the women all file out of the room. I trail after them, but when we get to the elevator, they make it clear I’m not welcome inside.
