My jaw fell open. I was dumbstruck now. Andrei wasn’t heartless? He cared about his brothers, at least?

It felt surreal to me, perhaps because my own father who had a similar reputation to Andrei wouldn’t even blink twice before letting me die in his stead. I really didn’t think Andrei would be that different from him. I thought he’d be worse at the very least.

Andrei was seated now. The brothers held each other’s hands, bowed their heads, and Andrei said a brief prayer while I watched in awe. They waited for Andrei to take the first bite of his food before they dug into theirs.

“I heard from Mikhail you don’t wish to manage the hotel in the countryside,” Andrei started. “Is there something else you wish to do?”

Isidor cleared his throat. “I haven’t thought of anything else for now.”

“You know you can’t stay partying and fucking around for the rest of your life,” Andrei said. “Make a decision within the month and I’ll support you if I find it viable.”

“Thank you,” Isidor said and resumed eating while Andrei talked to Mikhail and Dimitri. He was trying to keep up with their personal lives and for some reason, I was almost tearing up. It was good to see that Andrei at least had the ability to be nice and care about something or someone.

Maybe being married to him wasn’t going to be as horrible as I thought after all, and I may even shed a tear or two when I killed him. I hoped not to see this side of him more often because I wasn’t sure if I’d go on with my plans if I did.

I had to remember Andrei may be good and kind to his brothers, but I wasn’t one of them.

We spent the rest of dinner quietly. Mikhail and Dimitri were the first to leave the table. Isidor joined later but not without telling me he’d be coming to keep me company sometimes. I thought I should apologize for jumping to conclusions earlier, but I resolved against it because I was the one being held captive here, not him.

I straightened myself from the chair and started for the door when his deep thunderous voice stopped me.

“Adrienne.”

I froze because that was the first time he was actually calling me by my name. My heart jumped carelessly because I liked the way he called it; it made me want him. “Yes.” My tone was coated with a softness that I didn’t even know I had.

“Come here.”

My legs started moving to him before my head could process his command. It was at that very moment I realized I was really fucked. My papa would be rolling in brown blood if he came to know the daughter he’d trained so hard to become a son was being a good little girl for the man whose lifeless head he dreamt of having every night.

“Sit.”

I wanted to grab a chair, but Andrei grabbed my hand and made me sit on his lap. A thousand butterflies with wings as tough as bats flew in my stomach. Awareness of how close my ass was to Andrei’s dick spread around me like wildfire. I was hopeless, my senses gone with my freedom.

“Were you engaged to Mario Luigi?”

My heart switched places with my stomach as I heard that name, and my stomach churned nervously, making me sick and nauseous. Did my papa find out I was with Andrei? Was Andrei going to return me so I could get married to Mario? I didn’t want to admit it before but being captive here gave me more peace than being with my papa—not knowing who I had to kill next, who I had to seduce, or when I’d be given a punishment that would destroy my body until I finally gave up.

“Did—” I swallowed fearfully. “Are you taking me back to my papa?” My eyes began to sting as terror gripped me. “I can’t go back to him, please.” Tears started to roll down my cheeks.

Andrei cleaned my tears away with his bare hands. “Nyet, malysh. Didn’t I tell you I’m the only one who has the right over you?”

“What do you plan to do? My papa will not sit still when he finds out where I am.”

“That is what I want, let him come to me.” Andrei put his hands inside my tee and brushed it over my back. It had almost healed and there was barely any pain as his fingers trailed over my skin. “Did he do this to you?”

“Yes,” I nodded.

“Was Mario there when it happened?”

More tears filled my eyes and cracked my voice. “He laughed.”

Andrei caressed my cheeks, baring his dark-blue eyes into mine. “He won’t be laughing the next time he sees a whip.”

An eerie feeling crept up my spine with the way Andrei sounded. Darkness clouded every bit of emotion in his voice. Was he going to whip Mario?

Chapter 10 - Adrienne

Mornings were my least favorite part of the day. Sometimes, I wished I died in my sleep, and a few times, I’d even wondered what it would feel like swinging down from my ceiling.
