“I think that would be me.”

Adrienne stood behind Carlos with a gun pointed at him. She had both fresh and dried blood smeared all over her. It was so much that my white shirt on her was soaked with blood. Sweat beaded on her forehead and her skin was pale.

Carlos clapped, his eyes wide with amusement as he burst into laughter. The guy was really a psychopath and that ugly cowboy hat sitting on his head wasn’t doing him any good. “Can you see that?” He turned to look at Adrienne and then at me. “Now I see why my father was obsessed with Italian bitches. They have some nerve.”

I couldn’t mind the fucker now, Adrienne was trembling, and she couldn’t hide it much longer. She’d been in pretty bad shape after the accident so I was surprised she could even walk or do anything.

“Put down your weapon, Carlos,” she warned. “And move away from him.”

“Or what? You’ll shoot me?” Carlos broke into another episode of his maniac laughter. “Now I see why they call you morte. You’re a murderous Italian bitch and you turn me on.”

“Too bad sex isn’t an option when you’re six feet under,” Adrienne told him. “Now put your gun down.”

“Okay, I’m tired of this game now.” He pulled out a dagger from his blazer and started slowly towards Adrienne, slashing it in the air. “You can’t shoot me even if you’re dying to.”

“Try me.”

“You would have shot me dead if you wanted to, but I bet you can’t,” he said. “My men are outside, and they’ll come running the moment you shoot, you won’t make it out of here alive.”

He covered the distance between him and Adrienne and pulled the gun from her. She was barely standing now and struggled to keep her eyes open.

Gunshots started outside and I could hear shouts. Carlos turned to me, his eyes wide with confusion. He started scurrying towards me but dropped dead on the floor in an instant. Adrienne had shot him; my girl took out this bastard despite her weak state.

“I said only I could kill him,” she said weakly. “Only I can torment him.”

“Brat!” Mikhail ran inside and started searching Carlos’s pockets.

“How did you find us?”

He found the key and unlocked the cuffs. “Adrienne called me. She sent your location to me. Are you okay?”

I nodded. “But she isn’t.” I ran to Adrienne. She was unconscious now and seemed to have lost a lot of blood. I picked her up and ran for the daylight with Mikhail covering me.

“You can’t die on me, malysh,” I pleaded. “You can’t die.”

***

Adrienne had been unconscious for two days now. She’d lost a lot of blood and ran a pretty bad fever for two nights. I’d felt some relief when the doctor assured me she would regain consciousness soon, but she still hadn’t.

And I hadn’t left her side either.

“She protected you,” Mikhail said. “What will you do with her now?”

In the past two days, I’d come to the conclusion that I’d really hate myself if Adrienne’s life was threatened because of me. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself and I’d decided to let her go.

I was going to give her a lot of money when she recovered and a new passport. She could settle down in some country far away and start a new life. I hated I wouldn’t be part of that life, but I would rather miss her than lose her.

This woman meant a lot more to me than I thought. This woman was my whole life now and I couldn’t bear for something like this to happen again.

Adrienne woke up an hour later for the first time in two days. She squinted around. “Andrei.”

I held her hand. “I’m here,” I said happily. “I’m right beside you, baby.”

“Where are we?”

“We’re safe and fine.” I brushed her hair with my hand. “You were so brave, malysh. You saved us.”

“Carlos?”
