Camilla hesitated, but seeing as she had no choice, she came to me. I placed her head on my chest, running my finger through her hair. “I know it was a mistake, Camilla,” I said into her ears. “That is why you must forgive me.”

She tilted her head up at me with tear-filled eyes. “No, Andrei, you can’t.”

“I can.” I pushed her so she fell with her back into the pool. The pressure of her body hitting the water sent some of it splashing back up. I waited for Camilla to swim up before I squatted at the edge of the pool, placed my hand on her head, and pushed her back inside the water.

“Andrei, stop.” Adrienne’s voice came like the softest summer breeze behind me. “Let her go, please.”

I tilted my head to her. She looked so pale and sick; I hated seeing her so weak. I wondered how she could be pleading for Camilla’s life when she’d almost killed her minutes ago. Maybe this is why I found her so attractive because although she grew up in the same dark underworld that I did, she was not vicious like I was.

“Andrei—” Adrienne’s eyes shut as she passed out.

Chapter 25 - Adrienne

“What the hell do you mean by pregnant?” I asked, completely stunned by the new revelation, as if I’d not been having unprotected sex for the past month. I looked to Andrei for a reaction, but he was holding his usual expressionless stare.

“Four weeks pregnant,” the doctor specified. “There’s a possibility you would have lost your baby if you stayed in the pool any longer.”

My heart clenched, both because I’d just found out I was carrying my enemy’s child and because I didn’t want the baby to be hurt for any reason. I hadn’t even met it yet, nor had I even been awake for five minutes since I got to know of its existence, yet I somehow felt the need to keep it safe.

My life couldn’t be more fucked up than it is right now, thanks to a certain Andrei Levov and myself for not keeping my legs together or even requesting a condom.

“You should get enough rest, also eat a lot of iron-rich foods,” he explained. “Your iron levels are really low. It’s the primary cause of your fatigue.”

I glanced at Andrei again, expecting him to say something, but he sat there instead, peering at both of us like a mute. A million thoughts danced in my head.

Was he angry?

Did he think I intentionally trapped him with a baby?

Will he hate me?

Will he accept this baby?

“Leave us if that is all,” he finally spoke, his voice as cold as the pool water I was submerged in two hours ago.

If Andrei hadn’t come back, if he hadn’t saved me, there’s a possibility I would have died with my baby before I even got to know I was pregnant. Fear burst into a million ants and crept all over my spine.

The doctor packed up his equipment and left Andrei’s room, leaving me alone with Andrei. My heartbeat drummed in my ears. I tried my best not to show my anxiety about what he would say or think of the situation. Maybe Camilla was right, maybe I should have stayed away from Andrei.

I didn’t look up even after I heard the thudding of his feet on the floor as he walked to the bed. His warm hands cupped my cheeks and tilted my face till I was looking straight into his eyes. “How are you feeling, malysh?”

I heaved a sigh, exasperated by his question. There were more things to worry about than how I was feeling right now. “I am not sure that is the right question, Andrei.”

“What would be the right question then?” he asked, staring straight into my eyes.

“I don’t know.” I bit my lips, holding back the tears that were stinging my eyes. “I am pregnant, do you believe it? This is so messed up.”

Andre tucked a lock of white hair away from my face. “I do not think it is messed up, baby.” His response was quiet, considerate, and sweet enough to make butterflies burst in my stomach. “I think it is perfect.”

The first tear rolled down my face. “Don’t you get it, I am pregnant!” I yelled. “There’s a little human growing inside of me. A person.”

“And that person is our person.” He took my hand and placed the sweetest kiss there. “We made that person together.”

“What happens to us?” I dragged my hand away from him and mopped my cheeks. “What happens to this little person in my stomach?”

Andrei’s inability to be direct was driving me insane. I knew he didn’t want me, and his calculative responses showed the same. He was probably thinking of how to get rid of me right now, I could feel it in the marrow of my bones.

“Do you want that little person, malysh?”
