I’d asked myself what Andrei wanted, but I hadn’t even considered what I wanted. Bringing a child into a dirty world like ours was the last thing I wanted, and growing up with a father like mine, I wasn’t sure the kind of mother I would become.

The kind who burns her child to teach it a lesson?

Or the kind who gives her child everything she wished she could have had while she was growing up?

“I don’t think I’ll be a good mother,” I said quietly. “I’m a walking trauma, what could I possibly do for this baby?”

“Tell me, malysh. What are the things you wished for as a child?”

I sniffled. “A dog I’d walk to the park on weekends, bedtime stories, and cuddles whenever I was scared.”

Smile lines appeared on Andrei’s lips. “Those are the thing you’d do for our baby.”

Chapter 26 - Andrei

“We can’t just give her back to Dante. I know she is his daughter, but he may kill her,” Mikhail complained. He didn’t seem to like her the first time I brought her here, but he’d warmed up to her now.

“Do you think I’d hand my wife to that animal?” I put a cigarette between my lips and lit it. “I won’t.” I wouldn’t give up either my wife or my baby.

I stared at the pool in front of us. The mere fact that I was sitting in front of the pool where that bitch Camilla almost killed Adrienne and our baby made my muscles quiver. I gritted my teeth and threw my head back on the upholstered chair to look at the sky.

The ornaments in it shone very bright, beautifully, I would reach out and pluck some stars and even the moon for Adrienne if I could. It pained me that I couldn’t, being human sure came with a lot of limitations.

Mikhail furrowed his brows as if he hadn’t expected me to say that. “You’re sensitive when it comes to her.”

“And you need to get laid, maybe you’ll cool off a bit.”

My brother wrinkled his nose as if I’d just asked him to feast on a corpse. “Look what it’s doing to you, man. I’ll pass.”

“No one can lay a finger on her, Mikhail.” Because she’s mine, and the baby she’s carrying was mine as well. I’d burn the whole damn world for her and my child. Damn, I liked the sound of that, my child.

“What are we going to do about Dante? We’ve held it off for too long, some of his men were caught in our warehouse yesterday.”

I popped another smoke, letting it leave through my nose this time. “Adrienne will tell us all we need to know.”

“She won’t betray her own father,” Mikhail protested. “What if she’s playing you?”

The chances of that were slim. She wouldn’t kill the father of her baby for a father who was nothing but the gatekeeper of her hell. “I’ll take my chances with her.”

My phone rang, interrupting our conversation. I took it out of my pocket and checked the caller; it was Dimitri. He never called unless it was something urgent. Plus, I hadn’t seen him since I returned to New York yesterday.

“Brat!—”

“What do you want?” I said wanting him to go straight to the point. I was so mad at him and Isidor for leaving Adrienne alone yesterday, and it was even more upsetting that they hadn’t even realized what had happened while they were away.

“There is a problem,” Dimitri informed me. “I’ll call you once we reach the manor.”

I could hear Dimitri’s voice and two pairs of footsteps as they approached the pool. We hadn’t told them we’d returned to New York yet. I’d wanted to give them a shock and Mikhail didn’t mind keeping our arrival away from them.

“Christ!” Isidor paced back as he was startled.

Dimitri joined him. He wasn’t as stunned by my presence as Isidor was, but he still had his phone to his ear, a sign that I was the last person he’d expected to see.

They walked towards me and Mikhail. “When did you return?”

“Really? That is what you’d ask?” I removed the almost burnt-out cigarette from my mouth, threw it on the floor, and crushed it with the sole of my shoe. “I think the appropriate thing to do is explaining where the hell you went to while Camilla tried to drown the life out of Adrienne.”

Dimitri and Isidor both peered at each other before looking at me. “We didn’t know she’d be around,” Isidor said to their defense. He was really the most foolish one among my brothers.
