“Well, how nice of you to grace us with your presence.” I can’t hide the sarcasm in my voice.

“What is that supposed to mean?” He sounds defensive, but also annoyed by my remark.

“You’ve been too busy for us these days. Are you planning something with your brothers? Spending all day on the phone?”

“I have been getting some things sorted out, yes. What’s the problem?”

“Nothing.” I turn my face to the window.

“Jennifer, I’m not in the mood for this. If something is wrong just tell me and I will do what I can to help sort it out. Do you need something?” He closes his eyes for a moment and runs his fingers through his thick, dark hair.

“What are you planning with your brothers?” I demand.

“Nothing that you need to be worried about.”

“That is not an acceptable answer.”

“Well, it’s the answer that you’re getting,” he snarls.

I can see I am pushing his buttons, and I don’t really care.

“Kiril, what do you think I am? Just some little bit of entertainment that you can leave roaming around the house until you’re ready to interact with me? Either I am a part of your life or not. Either I get to know what you’re doing or I am left entirely out of everything. It isn’t fair to have this whole life of your own that I know nothing about—and to just keep me locked up in here with no life at all.” I know my voice is raised and I sound angry, but that is because I am angry and maybe it is time he knew that.

“Little rabbit, you are testing my patience right now. There are certain things that you just do not need to be involved in and my business with my brothers, right at this moment, is one of those things.”

“Fine. Do whatever you want. I don’t care anyway.”

I fold my arms across my chest, knowing full well that I sound like a child. I just can’t help that I feel so left out of everything and Kiril hasn’t even had much time for me lately.

“Jennifer, what is really going on here?” he asks with a sigh.

“I hate it when you avoid me. I hate feeling like I’m being pushed aside and ignored. I’m tired of these stupid games you’re playing with me.”

“What games are you talking about?”

“One minute you’re hot, then the next minute you’re cold. You keep switching up how you treat me. Either you like me or you don’t, Kiril. Why are you avoiding me so much?” I turn to face him with my hands on my hips. It is time he told me what’s going on.

“What do you mean?” he asks. “I’m not the one who’s being avoidant.”

“Yes, you are.”

“Little rabbit, you are the one who’s been pushing me away. Ever since we had that amazing night together you have been hiding in your room again, avoiding talking to me at meals, and giving short answers for everything. Don’t try and put this on me. This time, it’s entirely you.”

“Me?” My voice comes out higher-pitched than I intend it to.

“Yes, little rabbit, you.”

I open my mouth to defend myself, but something inside me stops the words that I want to say. I close my mouth and bite my lip. He is staring at me with his arms folded across his broad chest.

I shift on my feet. Shit. I think he might be right. Ever since that night we spent together I have been holding myself back. He told me he loves me, and I was not sure if he was being honest or trying to trick me. I pushed him away because of that concern.

I close my eyes and sigh deeply.

“I’m sorry,” I say.

“Sorry about what?” he pushes.

“I’m sorry for shouting at you. You’re right. I am the one who was pushing.”
