I leaned into Magnus's embrace, finding solace and strength in his arms. His presence grounded me despite the overwhelming revelations and uncertainties swirling around me.

"Thank you," I murmured, my voice muffled against his chest. "Not gonna lie, this is crazier than a goat with two peckers. And today has created a whole new definition of crazy."

“A goat with two peckers?” Magnus’s laugh rumbled through his chest.

I shrugged. “I’m in shock. It was all I could think of.” I lifted my eyes to his. “I’m so glad you’re here. What would I do without you?”

He held me close, his touch a soothing balm to the turmoil raging within me. "You'll never have to find out, Mila. I'm here for you, always."

With a deep breath, I drew back slightly, meeting Magnus's gaze with newfound determination. "Okay. Let's focus on the problem at hand. We need to deal with this blackmail situation before it escalates any further."

Magnus nodded, his expression serious. "Agreed. Marcus and Barrett are already on it. We'll find out who's behind this and put an end to it."

I squared my shoulders, steeling myself for what lay ahead. "I won't let anyone threaten what we have. We'll face this together."

Magnus's lips quirked into a small smile, a flicker of pride glinting in his eyes. "That's my little wolf."

I glared at him.

He gave me an innocent look. “Too soon?”

A laugh bubbled from my throat despite the insane situation I found myself facing. My world had been turned on its ass in the last few days, but I knew one thing for sure—with Magnus by my side, I could face anything that came our way.

Chapter 9

Magnus

It was two weeks since I’d claimed Mila and discovered she was a wolf shifter. She’d been quiet but resolved to deal with this new information like the fighter she was. I was so fucking proud of her. She hadn’t complained once, dedicating herself to uncovering her blackmailer’s identity. I knew she wanted to learn more about her shifter side, but this was difficult without any connection to her pack. No one to guide her or induct her into their lore.

I felt for my mate. She was disconnected from her kind. I’d grown up knowing I was a bear shifter, eased into my first shift by a loving family. Mila had grown up without familial bonds. My heart bled for that young child who’d had no parameters and boundaries to keep her safe.

But she had me now. And my family would welcome her, my mate, with open arms. I knew she was worried about their judgment for her part in infiltrating Grizzly Guardians, but I’d already explained the situation to them and her circumstances. Mila would find nothing but a warm welcome with my kin. And we would support her, help her adjust to her new reality because, fuck, it was a lot.

As the days passed, our bond deepened. We couldn’t keep our fucking hands off each other. I’d convinced her to stay with me, needing her close, and we barely made it through my front door most evenings before I was buried deep inside her, spilling my seed as she shattered around me. Our connection was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.

But it wasn’t just physical. Our emotional connection was becoming equally as strong. After making love, we talked late into the night, learning from each other as we talked about our hopes and dreams.

Mila also spent time with my bear. She joined me in the clearing near my house most nights and watched as I shifted. She was fascinated with my bear, and he adored her, reveling in her touch as she stroked and petted him. Every morning, I shifted and ran through the forest, giving my bear free rein and soaking up the nature around us. It was the happiest I’d ever been.

But the sense of unease lingered in the back of my mind. The mystery of why Mila had never shifted gnawed at me, a puzzle begging to be solved. It was a question that demanded answers and held the key to unlocking the secrets of her past and understanding the depths of her shifter heritage.

Marcus and Thor had been working on things in the background, but so far, they’d hit dead ends, like Mila. Whoever her blackmailer was, they knew what they were doing.

I looked at my mate now as she sat on the couch in my office, noticing the shadows beneath her eyes. She’d skipped lunch, but I wasn’t about to let her skip dinner. She needed to eat. Even now, she could be carrying my cub.

Standing, I walked over to her. My little wolf growled in frustration when I snapped her laptop closed.

“I was working,” she said, glaring up at me.

I held out my hand. “Yes, and now we need to get you out of the office and get some food in you.”

She sighed and placed her smaller hand in mine. “Fine.”

I tugged her close and stole a kiss. “I need to take care of my mate, and she needs to let me.”

Her expression softened, and she slipped her arms around my waist, hugging me tight. “I want this to be over so we can focus on the whole wolf thing.”

I smoothed my hands over her hair, loving its silky texture. “I know, little one. We’ll get the fucker, I promise.”
