After taking a deep breath, I walk into the restaurant and feel like I’ve been transported to another world. Everything is sleek, white, and modern. It looks like even touching one of the decorations will make the entire place shatter into a thousand pieces.

The host leads me through the restaurant, around the tables and to the back where there are private rooms. A glass door opens and a waiter steps out. He smiles politely to me and nods to the host before heading in what I assume is the direction of the kitchen.

I wait a moment before walking into the private room. There is a large booth in front of me with white leather and a frosted glass table. The wall to the left of me is a waterfall that cascades down into a small pool.

I don’t belong here.

Jovan slides out of the booth, looking like heaven and hell at the same time. His shirt is dark, making his dark eyes pop. His gaze moves up and down my body slowly, lingering where my silver dress hugs my curves.

“You look stunning tonight, Hadley,” he says, his tone as sweet as honey, though the look in his eyes is anything but.

“Thank you,” I say, taking a seat on the opposite side. The leather is like butter against my skin as I sit down.

Jovan takes his seat as the host produces two menus from somewhere else in the room. After giving us the menus, the host disappears through the doors.

“You really do look good tonight, Hadley. I almost didn’t recognize you as the criminal breaking into houses.”

I roll my eyes and open the menu. “I’m not the criminal here.”

“You really should watch that tongue of yours. It’s going to get you in trouble one day.” Jovan smirks and leans back in his seat. “If you like lobster, the bisque is amazing.”

“I’m more of a burger kind of girl,” I say, flipping to the burger section of the menu.

As I search for something not covered in truffle oil or gold, Jovan grabs a remote and starts playing with the color of the lights overhead. He finally settles on a dark blue tone that shifts to a slightly lighter one every several seconds.

“Do I even want to know how much this dinner is going to cost?” I ask, turning the menu around and holding it out to him. “There aren’t any prices.”

Jovan shrugs and fiddles with another remote until soft instrumental music starts playing. “I wouldn’t bother with worrying about the cost. I’m paying for dinner.”

I turn the menu back around and start scanning through the burgers again. My heart is racing a mile a minute as I look through the options for dinner. Finally, I find one that sounds like something I might enjoy.

Most of my food is limited to the few meals I know how to make at home and whatever I can get at a fast food place.

The waiter appears with a bottle of wine and pours our glasses before taking our orders. As soon as the door is shut behind the waiter, Jovan turns to me with a look that sends a shiver down my spine.

“Now, I have some questions for you,” he says, picking up the napkin and pulling off the silver band that holds it together.

He twirls the silver band on the table, studying me. The corner of his mouth tilts upward.

“What do you want to talk about?” I ask, feigning ignorance as I reach for my water. I take a sip and stare at him over the edge of the glass.

“Hadley, you’re a smarter woman than that.” He stops spinning the band. “Why don’t we start with something simple?”

“That really depends on your definition of simple.”

He chuckles and shakes his head. “Alright, if that’s how you want to play, then I’m game. Tell me about your childhood.”

“You call that simple?” I scoff and lean back in my seat. I cross my arms and wait for him to say something else but he keeps his mouth shut.

That infuriating smirk makes me crazy. I don’t know whether I want to kiss him or kill him.

“There’s not much to talk about. My childhood was shit but it made me into who I am.”

Jovan arches an eyebrow. “You’re going to have to explain that one a little more.”

“Nope. There is no way that I’m going to start unpacking my childhood trauma with you. I don’t see how it’s relevant to anything you want to know.”

The waiter walks into the room and puts our appetizers in front of us. The crab dip in front of me is mouthwatering. I grab one of the little crackers and scoop up some of the dip before popping it into my mouth.
