JOVAN

“It’s a good day for sailing,” Rio says early Sunday morning as I jump from the dock onto the small speedboat. “The delivery is about a half hour out. They’re waiting for the inspection before they bring it in.”

I nod and take my seat behind the wheel as Rio unties the boat from the dock. I rev the engine to life and we take off out of the marina. Rio takes the seat beside me, checking over his gun as we leave Miami behind.

“So,” Rio says, drawing out the word as he looks at me. I can feel his gaze burning into the side of my head and it unnerves me. “You want to talk about why you took the new bottle service girl to dinner the other night?”

“How the hell do you know about that?”

Rio chuckles. “You went to a restaurant with her. Are you expecting that to be kept quiet? Kennedy has a big mouth.”

“Your girlfriend needs to keep her nose out of my business.” I glance over at Rio in time to see his smile drop.

“You try telling her that.” Rio scowls at me before he relaxes and chuckles. “I’ll talk to her but I’m sure she is going to have a few choice words to say about it.”

“At least if your body turns up, I know who to go after,” I say, my tone teasing. “Although, if you don’t handle her big mouth, I may have to.”

Rio’s smile falters. “You know, if you ever do anything to Kennedy, I’ll be forced to get involved.”

“I know, so the message better come across and we don’t have to worry about that, huh?”

His loyalty may be to my cartel, but it is always to Kennedy first. I knew that when he became my right hand man and I’ve never asked him to change that.

Even if it drives me insane, his dedication to her has never compromised his loyalty to me.

“Hadley talked to Kennedy about our dinner, then?” I ask, changing the subject slightly.

Rio nods and flicks the safety on the gun, tucking it into his holster. “Yeah. Hadley came over last night. I was told to keep my ass in the bedroom while they did their girly shit.”

Now, that’s interesting.

If Hadley was telling people about our night together, I either pissed her off or scared her more than I thought I did.

“You know, you get this look on your face when Hadley is brought up,” Rio says, smirking as he goes to the front of the boat and takes a seat, staring out at the waves. “It’s almost like there’s a human living inside of you instead of a robot.”

“Funny,” I say, sarcasm dripping from my tone. “Any more bits of wisdom that you would like to share?”

“I would say that you should do a good job of not pissing Hadley off since she’s the only woman that seems to be tolerating you.”

“Too late for that,” I say, smirking slightly. “I don’t think we’ve had a conversation where I haven’t pissed her off. I doubt that day will ever come.”

“It’ll happen if you want it to happen.”

A white boat appears as a small dot on the horizon. I head for it as Rio grabs the binoculars and watches the boat.

The boat is rocking with the waves, sending us lurching to the side slightly. Clouds are starting to drift across the blue sky as we pull alongside the boat. Rio and the man on the other boat tie both boats together. I kill the engine once we’re secured and board the sailing yacht with Rio.

The men lead the way down into the sailing yacht and to one of the cupboards in the bedroom. The man pops the cupboard and a hidden passage opens up. We climb down the ladder into a massive holding space.

Pallets of white bricks wrapped in layers of plastic sit in the middle of the holding area. When I look at the product, all I can see is dollar signs.

“Alright, boys,” I say as I approach the first pallet. “Inspection time.”

The sun is high in the sky by the time we get back to the marina. Rio docks the boat and ties it off before taking a seat. He reaches into a cooler and pulls out a couple beers, tossing one to me before cracking open his own.

“I got news from one of the guys down in the warehouse district that Felix has been spotted going into one of them,” Rio says after I’ve taken my first sip of beer. “There’ve been three visits in the past week.”
