I’ve always said that I would never have anything to do with guns. I didn’t want to be like my parents. There is no need for me to be armed at all times, waiting to shoot someone because something they did rubbed me the wrong way.

That’s why going to the shooting lesson with Jovan feels so wrong. Learning how to shoot is something I never thought I would do, but after the talk with Jovan in his office where he said I am stuck in the cartel, if I ever want out, it seems that it’s become a necessity.

Jovan stands in the parking lot of the shooting range with a giant smile on his face. It’s the kind of smile that people wear when they are at peace with everything around them.

I have a very hard time believing that anything about him is at peace.

“Good to see that you did decide to show up,” Jovan says as I join him near the doors. “For a day or two I was worried that you were going to bail on me.”

“If I have to spend time with you, I may as well know how to kill you,” I say, giving him a sweet smile as he holds the door open for me.

Jovan laughs and shakes his head. “You know what? I’m not even surprised that is your reason for showing up.”

“Good. Don’t underestimate me, Jovan. It would be a mistake.”

He moves closer to me, his hand brushing against mine as he leads the way past the front counter and through a set of doors that lead to a gun room.

“I would never make the mistake of underestimating you, Hadley. I’ve known too many women who look as sweet as you but would kill me in the blink of an eye.”

Jovan starts to look through the guns, talking to the man in the room about several of them. I barely pay attention as I look around. There is something thrilling about knowing how to defend myself, even if guns aren’t my weapon of choice.

My baby has a cartel leader for a father. I’m not naive enough to think that the dangers of the cartel won’t bleed into our lives eventually. I want to be able to defend myself and my child when the worst happens.

As far as I could find through searching the internet, my baby is the only heir to the Aguilar cartel. I know how much heirs mean to people like Jovan.

Hopefully, I’ll be done working at the club before I start to show. He won’t ever have to know that the baby exists.

However, I know that it’s not going to stay a secret for long after I start showing. Rio will find out through Kennedy. I’m sure that he will run to his boss as soon as he can to tell him about the child.

“Alright, let’s go shoot,” Jovan says, handing me a gun and grinning. “Keep that pointed at the ground and unloaded unless you are planning on shooting it. I don’t want to take a bullet to the back.”

“Only cowards shoot someone from point blank in the back,” I say as I follow him through a set of swinging doors to the range.

There are several little booths in a row with targets far down on another wall. Jovan leads the way to one of the little booths and puts his gun down on the counter that runs the length of the booth.

“First, you’re going to want to wear ear protection,” he says, picking up the ear muffs and holding them over my ears. “I’m going to shoot a few and then we’re going to put a new target up and you’re going to shoot.”

Jovan adjusts my ear muffs before putting on his own, then loading his gun. I watch him flick off the safety and cock the gun before aiming it at the target downrange. Jovan’s finger curls around the trigger as his other hand supports the gun.

He fires shot after shot, each one a loud crack in the air. Though it’s muffled by the ear muffs, the shots are still loud.

Jovan stops shooting and unloads the gun before putting it back down on the counter. He presses a little button that brings the target zipping over to us.

All of his shots have landed either in the center of the target body or in the head.

“We want to make sure that you can kill someone if you have to,” Jovan says as he puts his target to the side and hangs another. He pushes a button that sends the target a short distance down the range. “We’ll start close and move it farther back, the better you get.”

“You really think that I’m going to need to kill someone?” I ask as he shows me how to load the gun.

Jovan shrugs and steps behind me, putting the gun in my hands. “You’re going to flick off the safety and then cock the gun. You want to support the gun with one hand while your other holds it.”

“People in movies only use one hand,” I say as his hands cover my own and he shows me how to hold the gun.

A shiver runs down my spine as his chest presses against my back. The warmth of his body pressing against mine makes heat rushes straight to my core. The spicy scent of his cologne wraps around me as Jovan guides my body into the right position.

“They do, and their shots go wild. There are going to be times when you can only use one hand, but you need to be a good shot to do that first. Becoming a good shot means learning to shoot the right way.”

My stomach lurches as he has me flick off the safety and cock the gun. I didn’t want to ever have to learn how to shoot someone. This isn’t the kind of life that I’ve wanted for myself.
