Page 30 of Rapture and Ruin

I’m supposed to be a teacher. I should be working on lesson plans to showcase in my portfolio for school. Or I could be picking up more hours at the club and getting rent money for when I’m in school and can’t work as much.

“Don’t put your finger on the trigger unless you’re sure that you’re going to shoot,” he says. His breath on the back of my neck makes me feel weak in the knees, reminding me I need to put as much distance between us as possible.

“You want to take a step back?”

Jovan chuckles, taking my earlobe between his teeth gently. “Nervous, Hadley?”

“I thought we were here to shoot.”

“Then shoot. Look at where you want the bullet to go and then squeeze the trigger.”

His hands are still over mine as he helps me aim. Jovan’s finger squeezes mine and the bullet whizzes through the target.

“I did it,” I say, looking over my shoulder at him. “I hit the target!”

He laughs, his smile sending a million butterflies rapidly beating against my stomach. “You did hit it. Now, do that a couple dozen more times.”

I take a deep breath as he steps back and shoot on my own. While the bullet doesn’t hit the center of the target like it did before, I still manage to hit the outline of the person.

Jovan’s body is still close to mine. I can feel his eyes burning a hole in my back. I feel like I’m going to combust when he’s this close to me.

Only a little bit longer and then I can go home and try to forget that this day ever happened.

After I finish the magazine, Jovan pulls the target back in. Most of the shots have hit the paper in some way or another, though most of them have left holes in non-critical places.

“Not bad,” Jovan says as he sets the target to the side with his. “What do you say we head out of here and I buy some lunch?”

I should tell him no. I should insist that I’m going to go home without him. If he comes home with me, I know there is no way that I’m going to be able to resist him for long.

Not when he’s looking at me like he is going to devour me the first chance he gets.

“Lunch sounds good,” I say, taking a step back from him.

Jovan takes the gun from me and disassembles it. After we return the guns and sign out, Jovan leads the way to his car.

It’s not one I’ve seen before. The car he’s driving today is vintage with cream leather and a black body. My mouth drops open at the look of the car.

“You really do have a lot of money,” I say as he pops the trunk and tosses my target in. “That’s a gorgeous car. I didn’t think a man like you would be interested in classic cars.”

Jovan smiles and closes the trunk. “You don’t seem like the kind of person who would be interested in cars either.”

“I have a friend who restored them during summers throughout high school. I helped him and he gave me enough money to keep me afloat during my first year of university.”

“One of these days you’re going to have to tell me more about your life. It seems like there is still a lot I don’t know about you.”

“There’s plenty you don’t know about me.” I pull my hair back from my face and put it up into a messy bun. “What do you want to do for lunch? My car’s here but we can meet somewhere.”

He studies me for a moment before tossing me the keys to his car. I barely catch them, my eyes widening as I look at him.

“Tell you what, we can take my car and pick yours up later. You can drive.”

“You’re kidding!” I say, my voice rising an octave as I look at the car.

“Not even a little bit.” Jovan heads to the passenger side and gets in. “Come on. I’m craving a burger for lunch.”

I can’t move fast enough to get in the car and start it up. The engine roars to life as I grip the wheel and grin. It’s been a long time since I had a chance to drive a classic car. I’m going to make the most of it.

Jovan reaches over and turns on the radio before leaning back in the seat and rolling his window down.
