However, he has me in his grasp — mind, body, and soul. I knew it as soon as we got back from our weekend away. I saw a side to him that made me start to picture a future.

“What are we going to do?” I ask, my hands shaking as I grip the edge of the counter and lean forward slightly. “He’s going to come after us, isn’t he?”
Jovan gets up from the floor and comes to stand between my legs. His big hands cup my face and he guides my head back until I’m looking at him.
“I’m going to do everything I can to protect you,” he says, his thumbs drifting over my cheeks. “I’m going to make sure that Felix can’t get to you. We’re going to be okay. He might have the ultrasound, but that doesn’t mean that he’s going to do anything just yet.”
Being here with Jovan is for the best. He’s going to keep us safe. He’s going to make sure that Felix can’t get to the baby.
Although, Jovan is just one man. He may have a cartel at his back, but when it comes down to it, are they loyal enough to die for a woman he knocked up?
The thought of people dying for me does nothing to ease the panic that’s bubbling to the surface.
“We’re going to be okay,” he says as his hands drop. His arms wrap around my waist and he pulls me into a hug that I think he needs just as much as I do. “I’m not going to let anything happen to you.”
At that moment, I don’t know whether he is talking to me or the baby.
I don’t think I want to know.
Everybody else in my life has been nothing but disappointments. They let me down time and time again.
I don’t want Jovan to be another one of those people but I don’t know if there is any way to avoid it.
Have a little faith in him, the tiny voice in the back of my mind says. He just might surprise you.

JOVAN
Hadley leans back against the arm of the couch, her feet in my lap as a movie plays in the background. I rub her foot, pressing my thumbs into the muscles and easing away the aches she complains about after a long shift.
In the several days that she’s lived with me, it’s not often that she complains about anything.
She is taking the news of the man who wants to kill her better than I thought she would. Most people would have run the other way, but she is still around.
“Have you thought much about what happens once school starts back up?” I ask as I start to massage my way up her legs. I focus on the muscles of her calf as she sinks back into the cushions.
“I don’t know. I’m going to go but I’m not going to be able to take much time off once the baby is born. I mean, I’ll have the summer to be around but the baby is going to be here before I’m done for the year.”
“Hadley, I’m able to take care of a baby while you go to your student teaching.”
“I know. I’m going to talk to my advisor and see if I can do it earlier in the year so I can take time off if I need to, though.”
She moans as I rub a tight muscle, applying pressure to the knot that’s built up there. I switch to her other leg, trying to keep my cock from standing at attention with the noises she’s making.
“We’re going to have the baby and work together as a team, Hadley. I have several businesses that I can run from home. I’m sure that Rio would be fine to step up and take over some of the operations for a little while.”
In fact, I know that he would. He came to me only a short while ago about wanting to be more involved with the business. Rio has made it clear that he wants to make more money so he can give Kennedy the kind of life she deserves.
If anything were to ever happen to her, I don’t think Rio would ever recover.
Just like I know I won’t recover if anything happens to Hadley.
I don’t know how she became as important as she did within such a short period of time, but she has. She’s the reason I get up in the morning and hate life a little less. She makes me think that there is something worth living for beyond money and power.
For her, I would burn cities down and conquer the world.
