While the gate offers a certain level of security that other areas don’t have, I still have my own men stationed throughout.

There is no such thing as being too careful.

I pass through the gates and head down the street. The lights of the downtown area are shining bright in the distance. I head in the opposite direction, needing some peace and quiet.

“You know, I’ve been wondering when you would step out of those little gates.”

I turn around and see Felix hiding in the bushes. My hand drifts toward the gun in the back of my waistband.

“No need for weapons, Jovan. I’m just here to talk for now. We have a little catching up to do. After all, we haven’t spoken since slaughtering each other’s families.”

“If you know what’s best for you, you’ll leave immediately. One shout from me and my men will come running.”

The cold metal of a gun presses against my temple while a hand slips into my waistband and pulls out my gun. My heart hammers in my chest as I look at Felix.

I should have pulled the gun the moment I heard his voice. Not that it would have helped me. Based on the gun at my head, I would have been shot before I could pull the trigger.

“Now,” Felix says, stepping out of the shadows with a grin. “We have some things to discuss.”

Two men appear on either side of me while the gun presses harder against my head. I don’t bother to fight as they restrain me. For all I know, Felix has someone watching Hadley. I don’t want to risk doing something stupid and putting her in more danger.

“I don’t want this to be an unpleasant conversation,” Felix says as he tucks his hands into his pockets. “But I feel like there is some tension between the two of us we need to clear. You still seem to think that you run this town.”

“What is the point of this?” I ask, my tone bored even though I know one misstep will put a bullet through my head.

“In case you haven’t figured it out yet, Aguilar, I’m going to be coming for you and your child. If you thought that killing your family ten years ago was all that I had planned for you, you would be sorely mistaken.”

“You won’t be touching my child. You won’t live long enough.”

Felix chuckles. “Cute. You really are stepping into the position of kingpin nicely. Unfortunately for you, I’m ready to retake the city. Deal with him, boys.”

Something hard collides with the side of my head. I drop to the ground and more blows land to my body, all I have the presence of mind to do is protect my head the best I can.

When I wake up after I don’t know how long, I’m alone in the street. I groan, my body aching as I get to my feet.

The second I’m standing, fear courses through me.

Hadley.

I take off back into my neighborhood, ignoring the pain that radiates through my body. All that matters is getting to her before Felix does.

If he hasn’t already.

As I try to go faster, everything in my body hurts. None of it is important to me. I can rest once I know that she’s okay. I have to make sure that she’s still alive. Still safe. Still home.

I burst into the house. My head is spinning and I feel like I’m going to pass out.

Please be okay. I need you to be okay.

When I open the door to my bedroom, I try to prepare myself for the worst. I didn’t see any of my men out front, but that doesn’t mean anything. They might be circling the house.

Hadley has to be okay. Nothing has happened to her.

I flick on the light to the bedroom and Hadley groans. She rolls over and pulls her pillow over her face as a rush of relief runs through me.

As I cross the room to her, I bite back the tears that threaten to fall. While I ran here, I thought that I was going to be walking into my home to find a dead body.

I would have lost the best parts of myself if she was dead.
