I should have been supportive. I could have helped her pack and then brought her over to Kennedy’s. Hell, I should have told her that I would be waiting for her whenever she was ready to talk about what would come next for us.

Instead, I did everything wrong and I have only myself to blame for the way I reacted.

I’m an asshole.

As I stand outside Kennedy’s apartment building and look up at the window I know is hers, I wonder if Hadley is awake yet. If she is even going to be willing to talk to me after the night we had last night.

If I was her, I don’t know that I would be too willing to talk to me. Hell, I would probably tell me to get lost.

Hadley isn’t like that, though. She loves me as much as I love her. She isn’t going anywhere, she is just doing what she feels she needs to for our baby.

Even though it hurts, I love her even more for that.

She is stronger than I am. She was the one who walked away when she knew it was getting dangerous.

The fact that it was days after I told her that I love her stung, but I understand why.

I can’t have men coming into my bedroom and trying to kill me while I sleep. The people guarding my home need to do a better job. I have other cartel members training to be on protection detail, but I don’t think that will be enough to get Hadley to come home.

“So,” Kennedy says as she appears at my side. “Do you want me to walk up there with you?”

“I thought you were in there with her. Is Rio up there?”

Kennedy shakes her head. “No. Hadley said that you were sending someone after her to watch over her. She arrived when I was getting home from work so we went to bed. I went to the gym this morning. I thought I saw one of your men sitting outside watching the apartment.”

My blood runs cold. I didn’t send anyone after her last night. I thought that Rio would be here to take care of her and there would be no point in sending anyone else.

“Where is Rio?”

Kennedy digs through her purse, her eyes wide as if she is thinking the same thing I am. I don’t know how much Rio tells her, but I know she hears enough in the club. She would have a vague idea of what is going on with Felix.

“He sent you a message last night. Somebody bailed on an arms run. He isn’t going to be back until tomorrow.”

I pull out my phone and check it. I thought that the last message would have been about the training we needed to do with the soldiers, but instead, it was one from Rio. Sure enough, he was going on the biggest arms run we had done this year.

“I’m going up there,” I say as Kennedy hands me her keys. “Rio only left a few hours ago. I’m sending a helicopter to pick him up. I need his ass back here.”

“I’ll call him.”

“Good,” I say as I pull out my car keys and hand them to her. “I want you to go sit in the car with the doors locked. It’s armored. Nobody will be able to try anything. Stay in there and don’t come out for anyone other than me, got it?”

Kennedy nods, a determined look on her face. “Do you think anything happened?”

My stomach lurches and bile rises in my throat. “I don’t know.”

“I never should have left her. I’m sorry.” Kennedy’s eyes shine with unshed tears. She pulls her phone out of her purse and starts walking to the car.

For a moment, I can see what Rio sees in her. She loves people fiercely, but she also seems like the kind of woman you would want by your side in an emergency. She is steady and strong in a way that not many people are when lives are on the line.

I send a quick message to my helicopter pilot and another one to Rio before taking the first step toward the building. I know what I’m going to find in there, but I hope I’m wrong.

I head into the building, taking the stairs two at a time to get to Kennedy’s floor. My heart is trying to break through my ribcage as I run down the hall and unlock the door.

The apartment is dark when I walk inside but all it takes is flicking on the lights to see blood on the floor. I pull out my gun and start walking slowly through the rooms, looking for anywhere anyone might be hiding.

When I finish clearing the apartment, I look back down at the blood stains on the ground. There are no long streaks, so she left walking.

It’s a small comfort, but it’s one that I’ll take right now. I don’t know what’s happened to her but I know it was Felix.
