The man laughs and tucks the gun back into the holster at his hip.

He crouches down in front of me, that sinister smile sending a chill down my spine.

“Who would have thought that a father was capable of selling their daughters to a sex trafficking ring?” The man snorts and shakes his head.

He reaches through the bars and runs his fingers along the side of my face. “Everything is going to be okay, sweetheart.”

“You’re a bastard.” I nearly choke on the words as I glare at him.

The man shrugs. “You know, some would call me a bastard and others would say that I’m just doing what it takes to survive. The real bastard here is your father. He tried to sell your sister, and when that didn’t work, he sold you. How do you manage to cry for someone like that?”

He’s right, but he’s still my father.

And right now, it’s hard to see the truth about Dad when he’s lying dead only a few feet away from me.

The man pulls out a set of keys and unlocks the door.

I scramble backward as he advances on me.

“Now, I hear that you’re married to Christian Herrera.” The man moves faster than I anticipate, grabbing me by the hair and hauling me to my feet.

I bite down hard, blood pooling on my lip.

Tears run down my cheeks as pain flares across my scalp.

He gives me that sinister smile and yanks my head back.

“Don’t be stupid, Zoe. If you want to save your life, you’re going to tell me what I want to know.”

“Go to hell.”

He chuckles and throws me to the ground.

I yelp as my arm smashes into the hard floor.

The man kicks me hard in the thigh.

I scream, unable to hold it back this time.

Pain shoots through my body as I look up at him.

“You want to live? You’re going to start talking.”

He slams his foot into my other thigh, the heel of his boot digging into my flesh.

I scramble back, trying to get as far away from him as possible.

I’m not going to betray Christian.

“He’s sending a big shipment of guns overseas. Where is it going, and how is he getting it there?”

I glare at him through the tears.

My lips press into a thin line as my head throbs from the pain.

The man slams his fist into my ribs.

When all I let out is a small whimper, he punches me again.
