“I don’t think you are, but I think that being in a situation like yours makes people do stupid things. Sure, you’re going to get to the bottom before me, but you’re not going to run. I would catch you. You’re not going to alert your family. You don’t want me to hurt them.”

My heart skips a beat at the mention of hurting my family. I feel sick to my stomach as I climb over the edge of the balcony without saying a word.

He’s right and we both know it.

I’m out of options.

Hopefully, my family finds me soon enough.

“Where are we?” I ask as Christian parks the car in front of a house.

It’s too dark to be able to get any details.

“My house. We’re almost late to our wedding, Zoe, but don’t worry. It will all be over soon. You just have to repeat the vows, we kiss at the end, and then we figure out what married life is going to look like.”

My stomach plummets to my feet, and I feel like I’m going to be sick. “Who the hell are you? Why are we getting married?”

“I would have thought that your father told you about the deal.”

The pieces of the puzzle start to click into place as I stare at him in horror.

I knew that I was supposed to marry someone to keep my father alive, I didn’t know my future husband was the man at the bar.

“Did you know who I was when we danced together?”

Christian chuckles. “Yes. I did my research, though it appears that you didn’t. Now, we’re going to go inside, and you’re not going to cause a scene. I will not be embarrassed by my wife on our wedding day.”

I’m definitely going to throw up. I can’t marry a man who kidnaps women from their beds.

He gets out of the car as I consider my chances of running.

The door flies open before I can do anything.

Christian smirks as he unbuckles my seatbelt before picking me up and tossing me over his shoulder.

I hit his back with my fists, kicking and thrashing, but his grip is too tight.

“I’m not going to marry you! You’re insane! This isn’t happening!” I kick him again, pain radiating through my foot as he grunts. “I’m not going to do it.”

“Wrong.” He carries me up the front steps and into the house.

As soon as he sets me down and flicks on the light, I can see that several men surround us.

One of them steps around us to lock the door and stand in front of it while Christian sets me on the ground.

“I’m going to be honest with you, Zoe.” Christian nods to a man with a small book in his hands. “You can either marry me now, or I’ll find some other less pleasant way to collect the debt your father owes me. It’s your choice.”

The world comes to a screeching halt as my mouth drops open. Is he threatening to kill my father? Could he do it?

I don't have to ask because I know the answer to that.

Tears gather in my eyes, but I’m not going to cry. Not for him.

I grit my teeth together and nod, tucking my hands into my pockets.

If marrying this monster is what it takes to keep my father safe, alive, then that’s what I’m going to do.

I was already supposed to get married to help my father, wasn't I?
