Fuck.

“Of course, she is.” As much as I’ve missed her, I don’t want to rehash this entire conversation with her. “Think you could stop her?”

Ruben laughs. “No way. If I go after her, she'll put me in the ground where I stand. Your sister is as terrifying as she is beautiful.”

“Stay the fuck away from my baby sister.” I sit forward, ready to punch his face even though he is thousands of miles away. “You’re my friend, Ruben, but if I find you so much as lay a finger on her, I’ll cut it off.”

“I’m not doing anything with Camila. Hell, half of the trouble over the last few days is convincing the men she sent to the hospital not to go after her.”

“She did what?” I pinch the bridge of my nose and close my eyes. “Ruben, please tell me that when I land, the only thing I’m going to have to worry about is a wedding that shouldn’t be happening.”

“I promise, you have nothing to worry about. Well, except, of course, your wedding.”

“Ugh. I’ll see you in a few hours.”

“Safe flight, boss.”

I end the call and glance out the window.

The car that dropped me off starts driving away.

In my mind, I get off the plane, call the car back, and go spend the rest of my planned week with my friends.

God, what am even I going back for? An arrangement that benefits both parties, but none of us actually wants? If only I knew who is targeting my men. Who is targeting me.

The pilot opens the door to the cockpit and peeks out. “Sorry to interrupt. We’ll be taking off in a few moments if that is alright with you.”

I nod and sit up straighter, fastening my seatbelt. “Yes, thank you. Let’s head home.”

As the pilot returns to the cockpit, and the plane starts to move, all I can think about is the fact that in no time, I’ll be standing in front of an officiant reciting my vows.

My stomach lurches just thinking about it.

Though I asked Ruben to do a full background check on her, I never really cared to look. I just wanted to know if she was safe.

I don’t know this woman, and it doesn’t matter in the grand scheme of things. After all, this isn’t a love connection. I had those before and look what that got me.

No, this is a business transaction. A trade.

So, we’ll get married and then we’ll come to an understanding of what our lives are to look like together, one way or another.

My head falls against the head rest, and my eyes close.

This is going to be a giant mess.

I don’t have time for another person in my life. Let alone a woman who might come with unreal expectations.

I already put the marriage off for as long as possible.

Now there is no escaping reality.

The last men I lost made everything that much more urgent. So, I have to get married as soon as possible. Sooner than scheduled.

Too soon. Which means my ass is back on a plane and flying home to claim my bride.

Only, I’m not ready. Not happy.

But fuck if I’m failing my men.
