However, the attack could be coming from Zoe’s father. It seems like more of his style. There is nothing well-thought out about the attack.

“Get Zoe and Camila out of here. Get them to the house. I’ll follow you when I can. Make sure that the pair of them are safe and locked away. If anything happens to either of them, I won’t hesitate to kill you.”

Camila glares at me but gives a sharp nod.

I know that she wants to stay and help, but she is the heir. She has to get to safety in case anything happens to me.

Our people are going to look to her for what to do.

Ruben looks at Zoe and Camila, his mouth set in a grim line. “My car isn’t far from here. We’re going to run for it. Camila, take the lead. I’ll provide cover. Zoe, you stay in between me and Camila at all times.”

Zoe’s eyes look like they’re going to bulge out of her head as she nods.

The three of them get ready on Ruben’s signal.

She looks to me again, the shine in her eyes gone.

I don’t know where she goes in her own mind, but she looks fierce and ready to do what she has to.

The three of them take off running as I race to a spot behind the stage.

I use one of the speakers for cover as I shoot more people trying to race for the parking lot.

More of my people flood into the tight quarters, their guns raised as they shoot the attackers.

More people start to fall, blood coating the cement and dirt.

Such a waste of good lives.

The shooting starts to slow until it comes to a stop.

I look around at the carnage, counting how many of my people have fallen.

I hold back the tears that threaten to fall, knowing that I can’t show weakness right now.

I need to be the strength that my people need, even if it’s the hardest part of my job.

It’s going to be a long night, and it’s clear that this is just the beginning.

By the time I get home, the sun is high in the sky, and I’m ready for a nap, even though I know I’m not getting any sleep for a while.

Zoe is awake and sitting in the kitchen with Ruben when I walk in.

Dark circles are beneath her red-rimmed eyes. She looks like she hasn’t slept in days even though it’s only been a few hours since I left her.

“How did it go?” Ruben asks as I head over to the fresh pot of coffee on the counter and pour myself a mug. “How many dead?”

I take a long sip of the coffee, trying to use it to wash away some of the guilt rolling through me in waves.

Even after seeing how many of the attackers my people were able to take down, it still feels like I could have done more to prevent the loss of life there was tonight.

“I doubt that we got everyone that was there tonight, but whoever sent those people after us is weakened. I saw a couple of men we used to know. The attack was Demarco’s.”

Ruben nods, his face solemn. “Are there many funerals to arrange?”

I’m going to throw up if I have to think about how many people I lost tonight. I don’t want to have to think about it at all. I want to move on from here and never have to look back. This has all been one nightmare of a night.

And yet, this is all on me, so I have to endure, even if just for a little while longer. Until I can hide I the shower and let the tears fall.
