It’s when we have to step out of the bedroom and talk to each other that things get hard.

Her smile comes back in stages as one song blends into the next.

We dance together, our hands roaming each other’s bodies beneath the shining lights and the stars.

The rest of the world fades away as I lose myself in the feeling of her body pressed against mine.

I could spend the rest of the night with her here like this.

If we could only spend the rest of our lives doing this, I know that we would be perfect together.

My body jerks and tenses as a gunshot rings out through the crowd.

I hold Zoe tight as I pull the gun from my waistband and duck with her behind one of the food trucks near us.

She looks at me with wide eyes as I hold a finger to my lips and peek out around the truck.

People are scooping up their children and running behind whatever they can find to hide.

More gunshots ring out and people fall to ground.

I feel like I’m going to throw up as I look around and see a man I don’t recognize standing on one of the shipping containers.

He hides behind a crate up there, pointing his gun into the crowd.

I level my gun at him and flick off the safety.

As I wrap my finger around the trigger, more people stream into the trainyard with guns.

I shoot the man down before turning to the next.

After I kill another man, I duck back behind the truck and turn to Zoe. “Did you bring a gun with you?”

Zoe shakes her head, her bottom lip quivering. “I didn’t think I needed to. I’m not going to stand here and kill people.”

I kneel down and pull another gun from the holster on my ankle.

After checking it quickly, I hand it to her. “You don’t get a fucking choice anymore, Zoe. If someone comes at you, then you have to kill them. If they point a gun at you, you kill them. If you want to survive, you’re going to have to kill people eventually. Do you hear me?”

She swallows hard and nods, tears shining in her eyes.

A pit opens in the bottom of my stomach.

I know that this is only going to shove her further away from me, but it has to be done. She needs to be able to kill people if it comes down to it.

I don’t have time to fuck around with her fear of what she could become. Not when her life is on the line.

Ruben and Camila race over to us from behind the stage where the speakers were set up.

Ruben shoots two more people down before crouching beside us.

“What the fuck is going on?” I lean around the truck, taking aim at a man with a black bandana wrapped around the lower half of his face.

The bullet whizzes through his chest before he drops to the ground.

“Don’t know. Security was supposed to have this place shut down, but I haven’t been able to get in contact with any of them.” Ruben’s eyebrows furrow as he looks at Camila and Zoe. “Demarco could be behind it, but I don’t recognize any of the men here. If it were him, I would recognize somebody, I’m sure of it.”

He’s right. The men running with Demarco were close to my father. At least, the ones I know about. It’s possible that there could be others now.
