I can already see that a fight is coming as her security detail moves farther down the hall, giving us a bit of privacy.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Camila’s voice is venomous as she crosses her arms. Her foot taps against the ugly blue carpet as she raises an eyebrow. “Someone broke into my dorm. That doesn’t mean you need to rush over here and have a guy on a break hauled away.”

“I’m so glad you’re okay!” Zoe pulls her into a tight hug and whispers something in her ear that I don’t catch. When Zoe pulls back, Camila’s glare is a little less deadly. “It was a good thing you were at class.”

“Camila, it’s time to move into the apartment. You know that the dorms aren’t safe, and this just proves it. Anyone can get in here if they want to. All it took was getting a visitor’s pass to be able to roam through the campus.” I open the door to her dorm and look around.

The dorm isn’t large, but there is a lot crammed into that small space.

Her desk has been overturned and pens are scattered everywhere. Sheets of paper are ripped in half and clothes have been thrown all around the room. Her sheets are in a pile near the mini fridge, and something is spilled all over them.

I take one good look at the dorm before turning to look at her. “Do you really think that I’m going to let you live here when one person was able to get inside and make your room look like this? Do you even know what they were looking for?”

“It’s likely just some drunk idiots who decided to trash the room.” Camila shrugs and looks to Zoe for help.

Zoe gives a slight shake of her head and looks at me. Her bottom lip twitches, and I can see the gears in her head turning.

“The lock isn’t broken and none of your roommate’s stuff is touched.”

Camila sighs. “Sometimes she forgets to lock the door behind her. I’ve tried talking to her about it, but she doesn’t really think it’s much of an issue. It’s not that bad. I don’t keep anything important here.”

I pinch the bridge of my nose, trying to keep my temper in check.

I know that this isn’t Camila’s fault, but she should have been more careful.

She knows what we’re dealing with. She knows that there are people out there who would love to get to her to hurt me.

“You’re going to the apartment, Camila. I’m not going to have you living in this place when you have an idiot roommate who seems to want to make it impossible to keep you safe. You’re going to be getting a new man to watch your home too. Cooper is done.”

Camila throws her hands up in the air, looking to Zoe again. “Please tell him that this is part of a normal university experience. He might actually listen to you!”

“I listened to you for years.” My tone sharpens as I gesture to the room. “All the damage done in there is the result of listening to you. There is no way that this is going to happen again. You’re moving to an apartment. No roommates to fuck things up.”

Zoe sighs and steps between the two of us.

Putting her hand on my chest, she pushes me back a step. “Why don’t you think about a private dorm here? I’m sure that you would be able to work something out with the dean. She would still be able to live at school, but you wouldn’t have to worry about other people risking her safety.”

“I’ll agree to that,” Camila says, raising an eyebrow at me.

She shakes her head and sighs. “Look, you can’t lock me up in an ivory tower until the day that salvation comes, Christian. I can take care of myself, and I know that you have people looking out for me. Everything is going to be fine, but you have to trust that I can do this.”

“You know it isn’t that easy,” I say, though I know this is a losing battle.

“It is that easy. You taught me how to handle myself. Everything is going to be fine. A private dorm is a good compromise.”

She comes closer and grabs my hands. “Please, Christian. Once I leave school, I’m going to be entirely consumed with training to take over the cartel. Please just let me have this.”

I can’t take that away from her. She is right that once she is done here, she’ll be consumed by the cartel.

Doesn’t mean I don’t hate it.

I sigh and nod.

Camila squeals and tosses her arms around me, pulling me into a tight hug. As she squeezes, she forces the air from my lungs.

I chuckle and hug her back for a moment.

When she steps away, there is a wide smile on her face.
