Zoe looks at me and winks before looping her arm through Camila’s and pulling her off to the side.

I watch the two of them as they whisper together before pulling out my phone and sending a message to Ruben.

He’ll get in contact with the dean about the room switch and then I’ll start moving her things today.

A few minutes later, as I’m busy searching through her room for anything the intruder might have left, Camila enters the room. She smiles at me and shakes her head.

“You love her, don’t you?” she asks, her voice soft as she takes a seat on the bed. “I didn’t think that you would ever get to that point with any woman, but I’m glad it’s with her.”

I stiffen before tossing more of her clothing to the side. “I never said that I loved Zoe.”

“Please. You don’t have to tell me.” Camila kicks her legs out in front of her as she looks around the room. “I know that you never would’ve agreed to a private dorm if she didn’t suggest it. She soothes out some of your rough edges, Christian. It’s not a bad thing.”

I stoop to grab some of the ripped pieces of paper off the floor. “Don’t go getting ahead of yourself. We might be working things out right now, but we still have our problems. I don’t know where this is going to go.”

“You know exactly where this is going to go. You’re going to want to be with her forever.”

Camila rolls her eyes and takes the papers from me, stuffing them into a wire trash can. “When she starts touring the world, you’re going to be going insane as you sit at home and worry about her.”

Even though I know Camila’s right, I’m not going to admit to it. If I do, my sister is going to think that it means she should drop out of school.

She’s going to see the confirmation as a request for her to take over the cartel early when it’s not.

“You’ve sacrificed a lot for me over the years.” She gets up to help me pack her clothing into an open suitcase tossed in the corner.

“I know where this is going and don’t even bother bringing it up. You’re going to get your medical degree and become the best doctor in the world. There is no way that anything is going to ruin that for you.”

Camila sighs. “Do you know where your wife is right now?”

“She popped her head in to say that she was going downstairs with your security to get some food.”

Camila chuckles and shakes her head. “She went to go sweet talk the dean into giving me the caretaker’s cottage. She knows that it’s empty, and her father is one of the alumni here.”

My chest feels tight as my heart swells.

Zoe is everything that I could want from a partner and more. She loves my sister just as much as I do, and she openly shows it.

Somedays, I worry about how that open show of love could be turned against her.

Every single day, I’m glad that Camila has Zoe in her corner.

“She’s too good for you,” Camila teases as she bumps her hip against mine. “She’s too good for everyone in this world, but out of the billions of people that exist, I think you’re the one that comes closest to being enough for her.”

I laugh and roll my eyes. “I know that she’s too good for me, but thanks for the reminder.”

“It should make you feel good. Your wife could have a life without you. She’s a smart woman. Even with the threat of collecting the debt from her father another way, she could find a way to leave if she really wanted to.”

Camila rolls up a sweater and shoves it into the suitcase. Zoe chooses to stay. She wants you, even though the two of you are constantly bickering.”

As I look at my sister, I see the hope in her eyes.

She wants my life with Zoe to work out. Through the years, she’s said countless times that all she wants is for me to be happy.

“I’m going to make it work with Zoe.” I stand up and look around the room, taking in what we still have to pack.

My heart beats a little faster. “I don’t know what happens tomorrow or the day after that, but I know that I want my future to be with her, even when we do annoy the shit out of each other.”

“Aw,” Zoe says as she walks into the room with a stack of empty boxes. “That was almost sweet until you had to go and ruin it. Now, what do you say we get the rest of this place packed up and get Camila settled into the caretaker’s cottage? Then, one of you can take me to dinner.”
