“I can’t help it. I’m sorry. You turn me on.”

“That’s okay. That’s probably just how we are now.”

I nipped the inside of my cheek nervously. “Does that mean we’re mates?”

His face was thoughtful as he zoned out, looking at the door. The longer he took to respond, the more worried I got until it was a horrible anxiety that swept away my lust for him in one fell sweep. I sat up with my hands perched on the mattress and let my hair hang over my right side like a curtain blocking the light.

He looked up at me then. “GG, I care about you a lot more than I expected.”

“I feel that way about you.”

“But mates…?”

My heart shuddered. “Oh, I get it.”

“I don’t want to mate like this.”

I pulled back an inch as I noticed my desperation. He could probably smell it on me. That was unattractive, wasn’t it? “I’m sorry.”

“You’ve done nothing wrong, darling.” He took my chin again, commanding me to look at him without saying a word about it. “What I mean is that I want us to go on a date together—a real one. So we can mate properly.”

A smile broke out on my lips. “Really?”

“Yeah, really. What did you think I meant?”

“You’re lucky you’re injured because I could pop you right now for being rude.”

He chuckled. “What did I do?”

“I thought you were breaking up with me, you jerk.”

“Darling, I would never do that in the hospital. That’s rude.”

I gave him a playfully serious expression. “Oh, so there’s still time for that, huh?”

“Yeah, how about tomorrow afternoon?”

“Baby, you’re in the hospital. You need to rest.”

He forcefully sat up with a grimace, then sighed as he slumped against me. “Look, see? Already getting better?”

“Daddy, you are so bad at lying.”

“Goddess, I love it when you call me that. I love feeling you close to me. I love how much you love me…”

There was no time for me to deny that one with the bruising kiss that silenced whatever argument I thought I could make against it. Because it was true. I did love him—with my whole heart.

I just wasn’t ready to say it yet.

And that seemed perfectly fine for my dear Eric, my darling Captain. He slowly worked his tongue into my mouth, reminding me of all the times we had hooked up with that secret under our belt. Maybe the passion would go away when we got the news out in the open, but it was so much better now.

His kiss felt utterly divine now that we didn’t have to hide it.

When he was done, he leaned back and took me with him, keeping me tucked under his good arm. I closed my eyes and listened to his heart. Already, he was sounding much improved. He was right about that. Something about us being close to each other helped us heal.

I was feeling better, too.

Eric readjusted his position with a sigh. “How long have I been out?”
