He turned to face them with a shocked expression.

“Freeze—” Grey choked and paused. “Hawthorne’s Investigations agent!”

Willow snorted and sent him a glance. “Really?”

“What?” Grey whined. “I had to say something.”

Even as they bantered, Grey moved around the room towards the figure on the floor. He kept his gun firmly aimed at Lamar as he glanced down and flinched. An elderly lady, aged about seventy, lay on the floor with red marks on her face.

“On your knees!” Willow bellowed and stepped closer to Lamar.

Grey could see Lamar judging whether to make a move, and he reached down and pulled the woman away from Lamar.

Lamar made his move.

He twisted towards Willow and lunged at her.

Willow leapt back and fired, shooting him in the shoulder.

Lamar screamed and collapsed into a heap.

“Cuff him,” Willow demanded.

“That is what I’m meant to be doing to you right now,” Grey muttered resentfully and yanked Lamar’s arms behind his back. He pulled out a pair of zip ties and locked Lamar’s wrists in place.

Lamar wailed like a baby as the butler hurried in once he was secure and helped the woman up.

“Mrs Winsett,” he murmured, horrified.

“I’m okay, Higgins, thanks to these two youngsters,” Mrs Winsett said as she was supported into a chair.

Willow still held her gun on Lamar, ready for any movement from him.

“Your arrest won’t stick. You broke into a private home,” Lamar sneered.

“No, they didn’t. I let them in,” Higgins interrupted. “They knocked on the door, and I heard them and let them in once they identified themselves.”

Willow and Grey swapped glances. That would make things easier.

“The police are also on their way. I called them when you got here,” Higgins said, drawing himself up to his full five foot six inches in height.

“So is my back up,” Willow replied, giving Higgins an approving nod.

Grey eyed Mrs Winsett. She was shaking badly and looked pale. Her face already showed the bruises of where she’d been hit.

“Did you tell the police we’d need an ambulance?” Grey asked as he put away his gun and moved to sit by Mrs Winsett.

“Yeah, I informed them he had struck my employer,” Higgins said with disgust.

“Could you get a brandy or whiskey for her?” Grey inquired as he checked Mrs Winsett out for signs of shock.

“Brandy, my dear,” Mrs Winsett murmured.

Grey patted and then held her hand. “My girlfriend is FBI, and I’m former FBI. I now work for a PI company in South Dakota. Lamar is on the FBI’s Top Ten Most Wanted; can you tell us how you know him?” Grey asked as Willow kept covering Lamar.

Willow wasn’t willing to give an inch where Lamar was concerned. The asshole has escaped before when the FBI had been certain they’d locked him down.

“He claimed he was my sister’s nephew by marriage. My sister and I did not talk much, so I didn’t question him being her husband’s kin,” Mrs Winsett said, ashamed.
