“This is my jurisdiction,” Matthews snaked.

“And an FBI agent made the arrest and called it in. Don’t mess with me, son; you won’t win,” Mae stated and turned to Willow.

“ASAC Ware?”

“Yes, sir,” Willow responded.

“And Agent Grey?”

“Former agent,” Grey replied, amused at the scene.

Mae’s glance swept over the room and landed on Mrs Winsett and then Lamar, who’d shut up and was trying to be as small as possible.

“Where the fuck are the paramedics? Anyone can see the victim is in distress,” Mae snapped. “Hanvers and Dyson, take the perp into custody, read him his rights, and let’s get this fucker sorted out.”

Two bulky agents behind Mae stepped forward and dragged Lamar up from the ground. He took one look, and his shoulders sagged. There’d be no escaping for the bastard.

“Nice capture, ASAC Ware. Very good, indeed. Happy to have him off the streets. Now, I need an update and… what is your problem?” Mae demanded of Matthews.

“You can’t take my perp,” Matthews stated, his arms folding across his chest.

“Son, that asshole is on the Top Ten, wanted by the FBI. He’s crossed state lines on a multitude of crimes, and we’re taking him in. You wanna piss in my field, then be prepared because I take bigger shits than you can handle,” Mae growled out, and Matthews blanched. But he wasn’t backing down.

“Phone your chief before you say another word,” Mae warned Matthews.

Matthews had the balls to hold Mae’s gaze as paramedics entered and made their way to Mrs Winsett. Then Mae deliberately dismissed Matthews and turned to Grey and Willow.

“Good capture, great takedown. You quit, Grey? Got a job lined up for you right here if you’re interested, son,” Mae said with a grin.

Grey smiled back as he turned his attention to Mrs Winsett, who was being asked questions. She was his priority for now.

“Well, that wasn’t how I saw our night going,” I announced as we entered Phoe’s home.

“Me either. Fucking Lamar, who’d have thought he’d turn up in Camden, Maine? Talk about ruining my plans,” Grey complained. He really did look put out.

“I’m sorry, babe,” I said as I undressed and climbed into bed.

Grey’s gaze lingered on me as he stripped down to his boxers.

“Tonight was meant to be the second most romantic of our life,” Grey drawled his eyes on me.

“Just the second?” I teased as I sat on the bed with my top half bared to him.

“Yeah.” Grey rubbed his head, and I saw the struggle within him, and then he laughed.

“It was never gonna go the way I wished,” he muttered, and I wondered what the hell was going on.

Grey sank to the floor between my legs and gazed into my eyes.

“From the moment we met, I knew that you would be important to me. I just didn’t realise how much or how vital you’d become. Beautiful, smart, sassy, Willow, you’re everything a guy could ever wish for. As much as I give you, you give back without hesitation.

“I see our future babe, house, grandkids, marriage, the lot. And no matter what, I’ll be by your side as you surge ahead with your career. If I have to be a househusband, so what? If that’s what it takes to make you happy. There’s no future for me that doesn’t have you in it, Willow. You are my everything.”

“Oh, Grey,” I choked out, but he wasn’t done.

“I love you, Willow Ware, with every cell in my body. No one could ever hold a candle to you. You ain’t perfect, but you are for me. Willow, would you do me the honour of accepting me in marriage?”
