Reluctantly, he got into his car.

XOLANI COULDN’T BELIEVE HER OWN audacity. How had she had the balls to kiss Barry then pretend it was a reward? The way she’d run like a scared mouse before he could call her out on her nonsense made the situation even more mortifying.

“Ugh!” She groaned as she buried her head into her pillow. What is wrong with me?

She’d always prided herself on being bold, but her cowardice had been on full display the previous night. How would she ever live this down? How would she ever be able to look Barry in the eye again, let alone talk to him?

Talk? Immediate alarm swept through her at the thought of having a conversation with him. What if he decided that they needed to talk about the kiss?

She sat up on the bed and reached for her phone. Like the coward that she was, she turned off her phone. She wasn’t talking to anyone today.

She spent her Sunday cleaning the house while trying very, very hard to forget the kiss. It didn’t work. That kiss had been too good to forget. That man knew how to use his mouth. The way he’d nibbled her lips, thrust his tongue into her mouth, held her close, and…

Stop it! Xolani gave herself a mental slap. Recapping that kiss was a terrible idea and a waste of time and energy. It had been a mistake, and it was never going to happen again. Never!

On Monday morning, she turned on her phone to find several missed calls and messages. Most of them were from her family or girlfriends. Barry had only tried to call her once, and he hadn’t left any messages.

She should’ve been happy, but she was not.

She was incredibly disappointed.

See, this is why she didn’t want to get involved with him. After such a heated kiss, he should want to talk to her or better yet see her. What kind of man called just once after turning a woman’s world on its head? A clueless man. A man that made women his friends even when there was clear lust between them. A man that still considered a woman his friend even after kissing her silly.

“You know that you’re not making a lot of sense, right?” Anika said while studying Xolani with humor in her eyes.

As usual, the ladies (sans Justine) had grabbed their morning coffee together before heading to work. During the walk, Xolani had furiously ranted to her friend about her current predicament. Anika was obviously surprised because she didn’t even know that her friend and Barry were at the kissing stage. However, she’d snapped right into advice mode.

Anika continued, “If you really aren’t interested in him, then you should be happy that he’s not making a big deal out of the kiss.”

“Okay, maybe I’m irrational,” Xolani reluctantly admitted. “But you weren’t there for that kiss. If you were, you’d know why I’m angry.”

“It sounds like you’re angry about more than just that kiss.” Anika sipped her coffee then asked, “Are you sure you don’t want to date Barry?”

“Of course I don’t want to date him.”

“Are you sure sure?” Anika asked as they walked into their company’s building.

“Asking the same question multiple times won’t change my answer,” Xolani retorted. “I don’t want to date him.”

“Okay.” Anika used her palm to make a circular motion in front of Xolani’s face. “But I’m getting a vibe here.”

“What vibe?” Xolani demanded. But her friend had already started toward the elevators. She followed her. “Anika, what vibe?”

Anika only smiled secretively.

Vibe? Xolani scoffed as she settled behind her desk minutes later. What was Anika talking about? Vibe, my ass! There was no vibe, and Xolani certainly wasn’t interested in dating Barry.

But even as she jeered at the thought of dating him, she glanced at her phone. He really wasn’t going to call her?

At lunchtime, her phone rang.

Barry was calling.

Xolani, who’d just stood up from her seat, collapsed back down as her heart danced to the loud drums in her ears. As she stared the ringing phone, her mind raced with questions.

Should I pick up? Should I not? Should I pick up? Should…
