“One night, Jinx. That is all I ask. I’m due in LA in another day, so it’s not like we will be able to turn it into more. It’s something you and I have both wanted for so many years.”

Her heart soared hearing him say that. She had seen signs over the years—like him gazing at her when he thought she didn’t know—but she had never let herself fully believe it, fearing she might be wrong. “You keep an apartment in New York?”

“Yeah. You’ll like the view. Remember that summer night we climbed on the roof? Just the two of us?”

She nodded, then bit her lip, still hesitant.

“Look, I don’t want to challenge your loyalty to your brother, but if we make it a one-night-only agreement, then I don’t see how our spending the night together can hurt him.”

“Especially if he doesn’t know. And we have to make sure he never finds out.”

“Is that a yes?”

Jinx reached for his hand and Logan took hers, then started walking to the exit.

And, boy, if merely holding his hand was doing these wild things to her, she couldn’t imagine what spending a whole night with him might bring.

Jinx was in “taboo heaven” as she rode in the back of a private limo with Logan. He said he used a driver rather than his Ferrari when in the city since parking was always an issue. Although he sat next to her reading messages on his phone, the air between them seemed to crackle with anticipation.

Or was she the only one feeling it? Logan had such a cool demeanor it was hard to read him. He had always been that way.

Meanwhile, the arousal factor of having sex with this outrageously handsome man was heightened tenfold by the taboo of him being off limits to her for so many years—first she was too young, he was her brother’s best friend, then she was supposed to shun him because of the break with her brother and therefore with her whole family.

Yeah, Jinx could be an excitement addict at times, and her inner voice called out a few warnings to her tonight, reminding her of all the times she had jumped into a romantic liaison without a thought, only to have to backtrack out of a messy situation down the road. Each time, she justified it as her search for the passionate larger-than-life love she swore she would find someday. Yeah, Natalie and Bailey both called her impulsive and even reckless, but—

“Are you involved with anyone right now?” Logan asked, yanking her out of her thoughts.

“You mean like a boyfriend? No.”

“I assumed there wasn’t one, considering you were about to sleep with Kirk the other night and—”

“I was not.”

“Well, then why were you leaving with him?”

“I don’t have to answer that.”

Logan laughed and gazed at her with such affection, it brought another issue to mind. One she was not about to mention. Seeing the genuine care for her in his look, Jinx realized this little adventure could be dangerous to her heart. When she had gotten in the limo she had only been thinking about the great sex she was hoping for, but sitting here now with Logan felt so cozy and warm that it made her realize she would have to guard herself against wanting more than this one night.

His boundaries were clear. Didn’t he say he was going back to LA in a day or so? Logan did not suggest they test the waters and see if they would make a great couple. (Which Jinx bet they would.) His invitation was for one night only. So she had better get her head—and heart—on straight for this.

They arrived at a high rise in the Lincoln Center neighborhood and went into a doorman building with a marble-floored lobby. He sidestepped the elevators and Jinx figured maybe Logan was one of those fitness-obsessed men who always took the stairs. And, of course, she had worn stiletto heels. But then he stopped at a different elevator and used a key. Oh.

“You have a penthouse?” she asked.

“Yep. Fifty-fifth floor.”

“Wow.” And that was the word that wanted to burst out of her mouth when they got to his four-bedroom penthouse. Trying not to sound too provincial, Jinx tempered her expressions of awe at the broad open-plan living room and dining room, followed by another sitting area with overstuffed sofas, and a modern kitchen with lots of stainless steel. But the most spectacular thing was the view—floor-to-ceiling windows that looked out over the city.

“I just need to let the person I was going to stay with know I won’t be back to her apartment tonight.” She pulled her phone out, setting her purse on a side table, and whipped out a fast text to Jenna telling her she would be spending the night with an “old friend” she met at the party.

“Anybody I would know?” he asked.

“Do you remember Casey, Natalie’s best friend?”

“Sure. Those two were inseparable.”
