Jinx did a happy dance and tugged him to the walk-in shower where they finally managed to get past their shower sex and actually wash themselves.

Logan had not laughed this much in years. Being with Jinx brought out the bright, fun beautiful things of the world. He’d been so heavy and serious and driven for so long that just being with her was almost like getting out of prison.

Whether it was the way she relished her pancakes this morning, or the way she noticed the pattern of sunlight on the fountain when they strolled through Lincoln Center plaza. She was so alive, he could not help smiling to himself at how thrilled and excited she got tonight watching the fireworks from the Eighty-sixth floor of the Empire State Building.

Yeah, the view was breathtaking, but so was she.

Logan had such a great time with her all day he almost did not want to venture out to the fireworks party and leave their love cocoon where they could forget about the rest of the world.

They cooked together, watched a movie, made love in his Jacuzzi after they did a workout together in his home gym. Of course, their most frequent workout was of the sexual kind. They could not keep their hands off each other.

On their walk home from their late breakfast this morning they had stopped at a deli and picked up food for the early dinner they made around five p.m. to celebrate the Fourth of July. They had coleslaw, potato salad, pickled beets and brownies to go with the cheeseburgers. All they were missing was the picnic table her parents used to have in their backyard.

Jinx.

That name that had been precious to him for so many years. He liked the idea that it had a reckless and slightly dark quality to it that Jinx insisted she had transformed into something electrifying. He remembered her explaining it to him years ago, how close fear and excitement were to each other and the idea that diving into your fear could turn it into excitement. And that certain kinds of trouble were worth the risk.

Like Jinx.

He could not take his mind off of her.

Even now, with this spectacular view, the best part of the night was having his arms around Jinx. Seeing her here with him was more exciting than the fireworks in the sky over Manhattan. Who needed them? Logan had a woman who set fireworks off inside him with every kiss, her every look making him burn.

Jinx awoke the next morning to the sound of Logan showering in the master bath.

Once again, they’d made love through the night, with Logan murmuring her name, driving himself inside her as she lay beneath him on the bed, or riding him on the sofa, every time taking her to that place of passion she’d been seeking, a place she could only find with him.

And every time they finished—breathing hard, their moist bodies glued together, holding each other close—Jinx had to stop herself from saying the three magic words that would no doubt scare the piss out of Logan.

She knew without a doubt that she loved him, and she believed he loved her, but was it too soon to admit it or say it out loud?

They said it over and over again with their bodies and with the caring things they did for each other, even silly things like the apple butter he’d found at the store yesterday morning because he remembered how much she liked it.

Logan came out of the bathroom naked, rubbing a towel over his hair, and Jinx felt like a dirty old lady ogling the eye candy.

“Mmmm. I was going to get up and get dressed,” she said, “but seeing this hunk walk into the room, I might just stay naked and invite him back to bed.”

He grinned, but before he could say anything, Jinx’s mobile phone rang. Logan picked it up off the dresser. “It’s your mom. You better answer it since you didn’t show for their Fourth of July party.”

Jinx took the phone. “Hi, Mom, I knew—oh. Victor? What are you doing on Mom’s phone?”

“Where are you?” Victor asked. “I’ve been here a week and I’ve barely seen you.”

“Something came up and I really needed to be in Manhattan.”

“You’re with a guy, right?”

“Uhhh…”

Her brother chuckled. “Well, why don’t you bring him to our barbeque tonight so I can check him out. See if I think he is good enough for my little sister.”

Jinx looked up at Logan and she could tell he’d heard every word from her brother’s booming voice coming through the phone. The happy sexy mood in the room changed to one laden with guilt and confusion. “It’s not a guy,” she spat out quickly without thinking. “I’m working on a project with another artist in the city.”

Logan shook his head and turned away.

Jinx ran a hand over her face, embarrassed, and Victor went on asking questions about the project. Luckily, her brother was the kind of self-centered person who was not really interested, so he barreled right into, “Well, I’m not sure if Mom told you, but it’s Regan’s birthday today and the folks are making this barbeque a kind of party for her. You know our wedding will be in Chicago and most of our cousins won’t be traveling to it, so they decided to have a big extended family bash.”
