“You—” I pause, not finding the words to convey the rage I was feeling, not to mention the betrayal. He’d done the very thing I asked him not to. If there’s one thing this has taught me, it’s this: He’ll never change. He’s even worse.

I go back to my room and slam the door shut, my chest heaving as my breaths come in shallow bursts. As crazy as it was, it was not out of character for Enzo to act like a total douche; but I thought with all we’ve been through, he’d at least consult me to find out if I wanted my pregnancy known. Instead, he carried on and made it known without my prior knowledge. I find it disrespectful and thoroughly upsetting. My fury slowly dies and is replaced by sadness.

I’d nursed the hope things would be different with the child in the picture. I mentally reprimanded myself for having such a fantastic delusion. Merely hours after finding out he’s the father of my child, he’s overstepping his bounds and taking liberties despite knowing he’s acting contrary to my wishes.

Damn you, Lorenzo Lombardi.

The door opens. Enzo steps in and plops on the bed beside me. He has this devil-may-care attitude. I know there’s no chance of him ever being different. He'll always be controlling. Yet again, he’s trying to rein me in and dominate me; and with his child in me, I feel my resistance start to wane.

My phone buzzes as a text comes in, undoubtedly in response to Enzo’s earlier text. Another buzz follows and two more as texts reach their intended recipients. I pick up my phone and check the first text.

Miles: I got your text, Kelly. Are you okay? Get back to me as soon as you get this.

Enzo's head turns toward my direction, a visible scowl forming on his face as he stares at my phone.

“You’re going to tell them right,” he says with a firm voice. “I meant what I said earlier, in case you have doubts. There’s no way you’re meeting any of those men while pregnant.”

Usually, this is where we’d have a full-blown argument, but I instead remain quiet. My dashed leaves me depressed as I resign myself to his wishes.

“Yes, I will,” I whisper instead.

I see him visibly relax and ease off. No doubt he’s happy to have finally gotten what he’s been craving for quite some time now. But what he doesn’t know is his victory is going to be short-lived.

“I’m going to step out for a bit,” he is motioning to the door. He stops just shy of it. “This is going to be good for us. It may not seem that way right now, but I promise it will be.” Then he disappears behind it.

I pull out my phone; my finger runs over the keypad as I compose a text for my girl group chat and hit send.

Kelly: SOS! Let's meet ASAP! I am leaving Enzo!

“Finally,” I announce to no one in particular.

I do a little victory dance as I walk into my apartment. I may have tarried, but I have finally gotten rid of those leeches attached to Kelly. Now she’s mine alone. They grossly underestimated their opponent.

I scoff at their sheepish acceptance of being one of Kelly’s lovers. It still makes no sense how they can claim to love her and then agree to share. That’s not my way: I refuse to be just another member of the flock. I keep what is mine, exclusively.

Screw those bastards. I win.

I sigh contentedly as I plop onto the living room sofa. I’m awed by how everything has played out. I never expected her to get pregnant, but I'm still thrilled about it.

“I’m gonna be a father,” I say to myself, letting the strange words sink in.

I exhale in my palm and rub them together suddenly, becoming nervous as I consider the weight of the statement.

I’ve got a family now, MY FAMILY, who I will love and protect no matter what it takes. This is everything I ever wanted; it will be a cold day in hell before I let it slip away.

Settling down and having a family was never in the works for me. I rolled my eyes when Micheal expressed he’d love to settle down and now I laugh at the irony of my situation.

Life sure has a funny way of surprising you.

Here I am, contemplating the same thing — and happily so. I palm my face. Filling my lungs with air, I run my fingers through my hair and exhale deeply. My eyes snap open as an idea comes to my mind.

Since we’re becoming a family, we should get married preferably quickly. What ring should I get? A huge diamond ring will send a very clear message.

A satisfied grin plays on my face. But will she accept my proposal?
