“I’ll leave you all to enjoy the rest of your lunch. See you up on the floor,” I said, then dismissed myself as soon as possible.

As I exited the dining hall, on my way to eat lunch in my office, I heard a voice call out from behind me.

“Dr. Aster?”

I turned, and Mickie’s green eyes stared intently into mine.

“Dr. Smith,” I said, my voice low and steady.

“Why didn’t you tell me you worked here the other night?” she asked.

I smirked, and she frowned.

Great. All I need is to piss off a newbie with no sense of humor. I swear, she seemed so different the other night when she was begging my ass to be her stand-in boyfriend.

“I believed you had bigger issues at hand,” I said. “You know, like begging me to be your boyfriend to make that ex of yours jealous?”

She crossed her arms, “I wasn’t begging you to be my boyfriend.”

“Then what were you doing, exactly, Doctor?” I teased, hoping she would chill the fuck out and have the personality I thought she had.

Nothing made your job a fucking nightmare like working with an asshole, especially on twenty-four shifts.

“Okay, fine,” she said in a clipped tone, and I sighed in relief when I noted her nervousness. “That was what I was doing, but I was half drunk. And for the record, I don’t do things like that. Ever.”

Ha, the ball is back in my court. She wants to make a great first impression. This is going to be fun.

“I’m sure you don’t,” I said, trying to remain serious.

“I really don’t. A couple of nurses I know took me out to help me get over that bastard, and—” She covered her mouth and eyed the hallway we stood in. “I’m sorry. Is there somewhere we can go in private to speak about this?”

Oh, I would love to ease your mind, but I won’t. This is too much fun, I thought. I thrived off having a good time at other people’s expense—nothing like watching someone squirm.

“I have some charts to go through but don’t worry. All is well, Dr. Smith.”

I turned to leave, and I could feel this woman’s nerves blasting me with energy from behind.

“Dr. Aster, you must know I’m mortified about everything. I’m going to have a difficult time working with you if you won’t give me a chance to explain why I did what I did.”

For the first time in my life of giving people shit, which I always did, I actually felt bad for her. I may have been an egotistical asshole, but I had a heart, and it was evident that this woman was truly tormented.

Of course, if she knew me and my personality, she wouldn’t be ashamed in the slightest. In fact, if she were anything like the woman I met a few nights ago, she’d probably be trading jabs with me right now.

“Listen, Dr. Smith,” I said, facing her. “I understand why you’re embarrassed, but allow me to ease your mind. I found it all very cute. Now, with that said, once you get to know me a bit better and after hearing stories about me, you’ll find that our run-in the other night was nothing to worry about. All I was doing was having a little fun with it, knowing you were coming to work here.”

“But we started off on the wrong foot,” she said, still concerned.

“I think we started off on the best foot,” I answered truthfully. “When you get to know me, you’ll agree.”

“No,” she shook her head. “You already have no respect for me.”

I looked at her as if she had grown two heads. “What makes you think I have no respect for you? If I’ve offended you, Doctor, I am sorry. I only thought?—”

“No,” she interrupted me. “You think I’m adorable and cute instead of seeing me as a professional colleague.”

“First of all, being adorable and cute is a compliment,” I held my hand up to stop her from saying anything. “Secondly, I see your point.”

“You do?”
