I looked at her as if she’d grown two heads, “Where the hell did you intern? That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard.”

“UCI,” she answered, challenging me to insult one of the best hospitals in Orange County.

“UC Irvine, eh?”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Well, thank God you’ve come to Saint John’s.”

“Why, so I could learn from a doctor who’s so full of himself that he interrupts my family dinner?”

I stopped walking, knowing I needed to deal with the consequences of my actions.

“I’ve been meaning to apologize for that,” I said. “I wasn’t thinking when I decided to jump up and barge into what was probably a nice family dinner.”

She eyed me, crossed her arms, and smiled, enjoying her upper hand a little too much. “Our dinner was over. That’s not the part you should apologize for.”

I was instantly confused.

“Well, if your dinner was over, then I wasn’t interrupting anything but conversation.”

She smiled again while I tried to snake my way out of this embarrassing situation. “My family thinks you’re a complete clown,” she teased, and my eyes widened at the fact that I really did embarrass myself in front of her family. No matter how much I might want to fool myself, it wasn’t a figment of my imagination.

“Holy shit,” I said. “I really am sorry, Mickie. I think it was?—”

“The booze?” she said.

I smiled, “It’s almost as if the booze was fucking with me the way it was with you that night at Avalon.”

“Don’t bring my embarrassing mistakes into this,” she said, more attractive than ever. “Own your shit, and then I’ll forgive you.”

“I did own my shit. I apologized.”

“Fair enough,” she said. “I suppose I just like seeing you all weak and vulnerable like this.”

“It’s the last time you’ll see me like this too,” I said, knowing we were even in the game of doing stupid, embarrassing shit in front of each other.

“Oh, I guess you’ll be fine while we’re camping then?”

Fucking camping.

“Right,” I said. “When was that planned again?”

“Tuesday and Wednesday,” she said with raised eyebrows. “My only days off this month, and you forgot about that?”

“Well, I don’t even know what fucking day of the week it is these days,” I answered that part truthfully.

“Fine,” she said. “I’ve honestly got no one to bring camping with me anyway. Med school, a long ass engagement, and all the bullshit that pulls one away from having a social life has me quite isolated these days.”

“Well, we’re perfect for each other. My only friends these days are the doctors I work with here.”

“That commonality doesn’t mean you and I need to date,” she said, and I smiled.

Glad to know that word was on her mind. The ball was back in my court and exactly where it needed to be for this to be exciting.

“How about we still take Tuesday and Wednesday and go camping together? We’ll play it by ear.”

“That could be a disaster,” she answered.
