“And your mom is like his daughter, Beth?” she chuckled.

“Well, I guess my mother can be vicious like her when it comes to keeping to the family legacy, but she’s certainly not as blunt as her.”

“Meaning?”

“Beth makes it very clear she’s going to cut your throat if you try and fuck with her family. My mother, much to the contrary, would never let you know she was cutting your throat while doing it.”

“Ah, sharp knife, and you won’t feel a thing,” Mickie said.

“Exactly,” I laughed.

“Remind me never to meet your mother,” she laughed. “She sounds terrifying.”

“Not terrifying enough for me to sleep in that tent with you, though?”

“No,” she arched an eyebrow at me. “So, give me the scoop on your mom’s side?”

We were both on our third beer, and the conversation was flowing so much easier than I expected to because of it.

“Mom’s family comes from Neuilly-sur-Siene, before it was annexed by Paris, of course. My mother’s family money is so old no one even knows where it came from anymore; it’s just always been, for many, many centuries,” I said. Luckily, she didn’t seem confused, so I continued. “The Pascal family fortune and name were strong enough to make her an acceptable choice of wife for my father, Sebastian Aster the Fourth. It was a marriage that mutually benefitted both families, doubling their esteem, so to speak.”

“Well, shit. Your family is pretty much comparable to a royal family, then?”

“Pretty much,” I rolled my eyes. Not even the booze could help keep that irritating fact away from me. “Both of my brothers are doing well by following my parents’ orders. Sebastian is married to a proper socialite, and Mark is engaged to one.”

“And you seem upset right now because I’m guessing they won’t be proud of you until you are too?”

“I have no plans to ever be married, and it’s most likely because of that shit.”

“Well, it seems like you’re the one who scared yourself with your family story tonight.”

I half-smiled at her, “Oh, I’m not scared. It just sucks to bring it up, realizing that is what my family believes is a true legacy. You probably don’t know what I’m talking about, but they believe it is our duty.”

“And how do they feel about you being a doctor? They must at least be impressed with that?”

“Guess again.”

“No?” she said with justified shock.

“Nope. They see it all as a joke if I’m being frank and a little bitch about it.”

“You’re most definitely not being a bitch about that. That makes me sad for you if that’s true.”

“Well, it’s very true,” I said, a bit sterner than I’d hoped that would come out. “At least they don’t hate me, right?”

“Right, but it seems like they don’t support you, and that’s very fucked up,” she said.

“It’s not so much fucked up as it just is. That’s who my family is. It’s how I was raised and all that I know.”

“Bullshit,” she said, challenging me. “I don’t buy that for a second, Mr. Wants versus Needs.”

“Oh yeah, smart ass?” I taunted. “Then what exactly do you buy?”

“I think you’re just confused. You want to make your family proud of you, but you must focus on being proud of yourself.”

“How does that make any sense?”

“Easy,” she shrugged and stood up. “Put yourself, your needs, and your wants first, and you’ll see what I’m talking about.”
