“That money can’t buy you happiness?”

“Fuck yes. I most certainly do,” he laughed. “Although everything I bought for our trip would prove that otherwise.”

“You don’t say,” I laughed.

“Really, though? We could’ve loaded up a cooler of beer, some hot dogs, buns, and chips, one tent, and some sleeping bags, and I guarantee you we’d be just as happy as we are now.”

“You’re sure about that?”

“Yup,” he said. “We’d still be sitting here talking about the same shit, just in a different setting. I’ve grown up in and around wealth, and it’s rare to see a smile on someone’s face. They all walk around like they haven’t taken a healthy shit in years.”

“They probably haven’t,” I laughed.

“I know they haven’t because my healthy shit didn’t occur until I got away from all that.”

“You’re too much sometimes.”

“I’m really not. Everyone is so wound up, and their lives revolve around rules one must follow to worship their money.”

“Rules?”

“Yeah. No flaunting things is rule number one. I think their sorrow and lack of happiness come from being chained to their wealth—whether they make more money, lose money, or maintain it. Everything revolves around it.”

“Sounds like a prison.”

“It is a mental lockdown, and I’ve never been happier to be away from it and live a real life that doesn’t revolve around it.”

“Well, you’re one of the happiest guys I know,” I said truthfully. “So, whether your family is proud of you, you made the right choice.”

“Well, of course I did. I chose myself and my own happiness.”

“I guess you’ve got it all figured out then, don’t you?” I teased.

“Just the important parts,” he chuckled. “I must ask you, though. Why won’t you date?”

“I haven’t said I won’t date; I just said I won’t date you.”

“Yeah, and that’s saying you won’t date anyone because, last I checked, the only way anyone turns me down is if they’re into other women or not into dating at all.”

“You are so damn cocky,” I said.

“Well, it’s true.”

“So, you’re telling me that no one has ever turned you down unless they’re not into men?”

“Never. Just you. So, unless you’re into women, you’re not dating.”

“I honestly don’t know why you care unless it’s killing your ego.”

“Pretty much,” he laughed. “Seriously though, did that dick from the night we met fuck you up that bad?”

“That’s a hell of a conclusion to jump to, but you seem to love guessing and jumping to conclusions when it comes to getting inside my mind.”

“This is true. So, spill it. You asked me to be a stand-in boyfriend that night. I want to know what that dick did to screw up the best thing he ever had.”

“Well, he did do that,” I said, folding my hands in my lap, more comfortable and relaxed on the air mattress. “But I don’t know. He and I just grew apart. He said he was all in when we met, and then I buried myself in medical school, and we just sort of existed as roommates together.”

“Fuck,” he answered. “There was no getting it back?”
