“I have two deliveries in the next forty-five minutes, and once you and I get started down this road,” I eyed him with a smirk, “we can’t seem to think about anything but that, and I’m still working.”

He smiled, and this time, it finally reached his eyes, “Let me take you down for dinner?”

“Like I said, I have two patients on the cusp of delivering,” I chuckled. “I’m not going to be able to eat until after that.”

He took my hand and led me out of the vending room. “Let’s grab a decent coffee from Beans, then?”

“Beans closed at seven. It’s eight-thirty,” I softly laughed, then ran my hand down his cheek. “Why don’t I, for the first time since falling madly in love with your crazy ass, just head to your house tomorrow night after I’ve slept off my twenty-four-hour shift and you’ve gotten off work?”

He frowned, “I can’t wait that long.”

“Aw,” I smiled at him, “look at you. You’re like a high school boy in love.”

“I just want to spend every minute possible with you.”

“Well, if that’s the case, it won’t be possible until tomorrow night once you’re off work.” I couldn’t ignore his expression, “John, what’s going on? Something isn’t right, and if we want to reassure each other that we’re both okay, we should probably communicate. Perhaps that’s why we’re both having these weird freakouts. We’re not communicating, and all we’re doing is screwing and holding each other every time we’re in each other’s sights.”

“You say that as if it were a bad thing,” he played back.

“It’s bad when that’s all we ever do.”

“Fine,” he said, taking my hand and pulling me back into his arms. “I need to get this off my chest, but I worry it might frighten you.”

I shook my head. “The only thing that will frighten me is you keeping things from me. My mind will run in a hundred directions if I’m left to come to conclusions on my own.”

“Fair enough,” he said. “In that case, this is about my family. I saw my brother tonight. He was wearing the fear of the future expression, and it spazzed me out.”

“I’ll be honest,” I said, feeling a bit calmer, “I’m pretty sure my dad will give you a hard time about dating me and whether or not you’re good enough for his eldest daughter, so maybe both our families are weird,” I finished with a laugh.

John stopped and pulled me off to the side of the automatic doors that led into the OB unit. “That’s different,” he said with an endearing smile, his eyes sparkling in a way that gave beautiful definition to the defined and sharp features of his face. “Having your father question my intentions and feelings for you,” his face twisted in some concern, “that’s normal, and I’m prepared for it. However, what’s not normal is my family in its entirety.”

He seemed more annoyed than worried now.

“That bad?” I questioned.

John’s expression grew darker while he slid his hands into his pockets and stared down the empty hall. He went to talk, then bit his bottom lip as if to hold something in that he was too afraid to speak about.

“I have a feeling this is all my fault because of how I acted the other day when I was worried about you not introducing me to your family,” I said, knowing that this had to do with John’s fears. “Listen,” I tugged on his stiff arm, “we’re hardly a serious item. We’re just enjoying each other in an exclusive relationship. We spent one weekend together, and then I flipped out, acting like a crazy woman and wanting to be introduced to your family.”

He chuckled and looked back at me, “That is a bit of a Fatal Attraction red flag for me.”

“When you think about it,” I laughed, “it is extremely bizarre for me to insist that you prove your love for me by introducing me to your family. Let’s just pause on that. You and I are getting to know each other. The sex is off the charts amazing, and yes, both of us think it might just be love. But we have so much more to explore before we go to the next level. So, all red flags aside, let’s just relax and enjoy taking things slow.”

Saying that out loud made me feel better, but from the look on John’s face, he was confused and struggling to come up with a response.

“You know what I’d like to do tomorrow night?” he asked.

I watched him turn back into the lively John again, and it made me smile, “What?”

“Have you over for old black and white movies. We can eat popcorn and then enjoy a lovely dinner.”

“That sounds quite lovely, especially since I’ve never seen your house,” I hugged him. I was a bit relieved he was somewhat calmer.

His hands ran up my back while his lips went to my forehead, “Let’s do that. And bring your work clothes so we can have a sleepover and go to work together the next morning.”

I laughed and stared into his youthful eyes. “A sleepover?” I teased his adorable, excited expression. “I’ll bring my PJ’s and?—”

His expression smoldered as his gaze went straight through me. “There will be no need for PJs,” he said in a voice that perked my body right up. “I’ll decide what you wear in my home.”
