ELIZABETH

Curling into the corner of the sofa, my feet beneath my bum, I read the text from Reign again.

REIGN

I should’ve told you before—when you asked me. But you took his word over mine, and that hurt me. Part of me wants to leave and never look back, but I owe us more than that. Come to me, Lizzie, and I’ll answer your questions.

Tears stung my eyes as I stood up, tugging on my boots. It didn’t matter that I’d wondered whether Reign was a murderer—the fact was I didn’t give him the chance to defend himself. After begging him to talk to me and tell me about his past, I took my abuser’s—his enemy’s—word over his.

Shame coursed through me as I grasped Tye’s car keys, hesitating by the bedroom door to tell them where I was going. The silence behind it told me they were sleeping, so instead, I scribbled a note telling them that I borrowed Tye’s car to see Reign.

The drive to Reign’s house relied on Tye’s Sat Nav because I didn’t know where I was going. Luckily for me, Tye had stored Reign’s address.

Reign couldn’t leave again.

Why did I believe AJ?

Why didn’t Reign tell me?

Accidental murder, or manslaughter, wasmassive, but murder? I couldn’t believe Reign was capable of that deep down. Even though Reign’s voice in those videos sent chills down my spine—I’d never heard him like that.

A dominant.

Not once had he been like that with me.

Why did you doubt him then?I asked myself. The truth was, I didn’t know. Whether it was the aftereffect of being drugged or sheer fear of these men, I didn’t know.

But I did love Reign.

I had no doubt that he knew about Alexander and me, and the thought of him imagining me with Alexander made my stomach churn.

Reign hates AJ.

The sat nav announced my arrival, and I searched around me until my eyes fell on the house I’d come to call home. A soft light beckoned me from the porch, and I took a deep, shaky breath.

I’m terrified.

I pulled myself together, striding toward the door as it opened softly, Reign’s familiar broad shoulders stiffening as I moved closer.

Reign stared at me as though he saw a ghost, his gaze hardening as he stepped back to allow me entrance.

“You came.”

His voice melted me — His entirepresencemelted me. He wore sweatpants and a thin t-shirt, and behind him, I made out the suitcase that his passport rested on. My heart lurched in my chest — he couldn’t leave. No way.

“Of course I did.” My words were whispered, but he nodded at me, stroking his jaw as the door closed.

“You say ‘of course I did’like you’re predictable, Elizabeth. You’re anything but.”

The silence throbbed between us, and I cleared my throat, avoiding the bed that reminded me of the filth I’d enjoyed here. Instead, my eyes skimmed the room, anything so I didn’t have to see his disgusted gaze. It travelled over me like a laser, stripping me bare of the clothes on my body.

“So, you fucked him?”

I baulked, staring at him in stunned disbelief.

“No, he drugged me,” I told him, finally meeting his gaze. “I don’t know what happened, but I’m sorry I went to confront him. I should’ve known—”

His eyes burned into mine as he tilted his head, watching me.
