I pursed my lips together, wrapping my fingers around the coffee.

“Brandon, I’m sorry, but I can’t do this. You and I have nothing to say to each other. I don’t think we ever did.”

Brandon clenched his fist, slamming it onto the coffee table with a bang.

“Actually, we do. You can’t just walk out on me—you didsomethingwith that tattooed guy. We’re both guilty in this.”

A trickle of fear ran through me as he gripped my wrist, smiling.

Why the fuck is he smiling?

“Let go of my arm,” I said, trying to tug it from his grasp.

Brandon moved closer to me, pulling me toward him as he did.

“We’re not done talking.”

“Ah, Elizabeth. I’ll walk you to the office if you’re ready to go?” A deep voice interrupted us, and I looked into the ice-blue glare assaulting Brandon. I breathed, taking a moment to pull away from Brandon.

Mr West glared at Brandon like a fly he wanted to swat.

Brandon glared back. “Who are you?”

Mr West smiled wolfishly. “That depends on who you are. I can be the nicest guy in the world or your worst nightmare. You choose.”

My mouth fell open at the ease with which Mr West delivered his threat, but I scrambled to my feet, turning away from Brandon.

“Are you threatening me?” Brandon snapped, but I didn’t stay to hear Mr West's response.

I pushed through the coffee shop's doors, inhaling a lungful of crisp morning air.

My chest tightened, and hot tears pricked my eyes.

Who does Brandon think he is?

Why did he grab me like that?

I felt his eyes on me, but I didn’t turn to face them.

“Elizabeth.”

A hand rests on my lower back, guiding me softly forward.

Fighting back tears, I nod curtly, embarrassed that my boss had found me in such a vulnerable situation.

“You’re okay; he can’t see you now,” Mr West murmured, moving us around the side of the building. He studied me, exhaling harshly through his nostrils.

“I‘m fine,” I whispered, despite feeling anything but.

A finger lifted my chin, and fat, salty tears rolled down my cheeks when I blinked.

“Of course you are.” Mr West chuckled, lifting his brows, his eyes following the finger that caressed my jaw. “Shh, sweetheart.”

“Fuck,” I whispered.

“Are you alright now?”

The softness in his tone was something I’d never heard before. His fingers stroked my cheek like I was too fragile to touch.
