ELIZABETH

When did my life become such a fine mess? Even the bright sunshine did nothing to soothe my troubled mind. I sucked on the almost-empty-coffee cup in my hand, groaning when I reached the foam. There’s never enough coffee for the morning.

I was standing outside of my office building— my soon-to-be previous place of work— and wondered if what I was about to do was wise.

Probably not.

But I needed to tell Alexander James West what I thought of him, face to face, and I’d never step foot in that building again.

A door slammed behind me, and I closed my eyes and tried to calm my racing nerves.

He can’t hurt you on the street, Elizabeth.

“Good morning.” Alexander chirped, and his telltale cologne hit me before I saw his shadow appear on the ground beside mine. “You look like shit again. I can’t keep paying for you to go to the fucking salon, Elizabeth.”

I turned slowly, my eyes fixing on his chest before creeping up to the sneer on his lips, then to his hostile blue eyes. My heart raced in my chest, and I trembled, but I lifted my head high and addressed him in a voice that made me proud.

“Alexander. I am no longer working for West Industries, effective immediately.”

Alexander’s eyes narrowed as he tilted his head back, studying me with amusement.

“Is that right? You have a contract, Elizabeth, so quit fucking around and get to work.”

“Actually,” I said, clutching the coffee cup for strength. “The contract is null and void based on the abuse I suffered at your hands in your office.”

Alexander gazed around us as he spoke, sending chills down my spine. “Lower your tone, Elizabeth. You wanted it, your pussy was gushing for me.”

Nausea rolled in my stomach as I stepped back, aware of the people heading into the building around us, paying attention.

Good.

“So I quit,” I thundered, sending him a triumphant glare. “And if you want me to go quietly, I suggest you let me.”

My skin prickled beneath his penetrating glare.

“You’ve got quite the attitude today, haven’t you?”

I said nothing and stepped further back, pleased at how strong I’d been.

Fuck you, Alexander West.

“Clear your office out, and don’t ever show your face here again,” Alexander warned, shoving past me with a growl.

My office? I racked my brain for thoughts of what I had in the office, and my heart sank my laptop, iPad, and diary. Sure, I could replace things, but years of work were stored in the laptop and iPad, and I needed my diary. It had every acquaintance I’d ever met in there, including addresses for my family worldwide. My certificates for my education were there, too; fuck!

Damn, why didn’t I make digital copies? I have no choice; I have to go back into the office.

“Elizabeth.” His voice commanded me to pay attention, and I tilted my head to the left to show I was listening. “Now.”

Twisting on my heel, I arch a brow at my ex-boss—my abusivecuntof an ex-boss.

“Fine.”

I strode past him and headed for the elevator, squeezing in before the doors slid shut. Alexander glared at me from the doorway of the building, and I shuddered. Hopefully, I could grab my shit and leave, even though I felt a pang of sadness for leaving Michelle behind. God only knew what Alexander was capable of. I needed to warn her.

The elevator doors finally slid open on the twentieth floor, and I marched out, glancing around me to make sure Alexander hadn’t made it up here yet.
